Why is it better to have the tandems slid forward when alleydocking?

Hammer, do you agree with what I wrote in bold-faced font in post #119?

That? Of course, a shorter trailer is always quicker to maneuver because it takes less lateral movement of the 5th wheel for any given change of angle.

For example, in the 2nd example you mentioned, with the limited space in front of the truck, a fully shortened trailer might shift a foot laterally with every pull up, where a stretched out trailer might only move inches.

Then why, I'm still asking, did you ask this
"Are you ONLY worried about tail swing when you have to make a pull up and drive forward during the back, or are you worried about tail swing when you are actually moving the truck in reverse as well?
What type of tail swing are you worried about? Please elaborate."

in the first place if you already know? And no, the rear of the trailer will not move any further or faster than the the front of the trailer since, you know, it's all one piece.

The rear of the trailer will move laterally faster on a 45 degree back if the tandems are all the way forward than if the tandems are to the rear.

I believe that I asked this to try to clarify what his position was.

There are two reasons (and only two reasons) why having your tandems forward allows one to complete a 45 degree back with less forward space to the North: 1# a shorter wheelbase allows there to be a shorter distance from the point of least clearance of the obstacle on the inside of the turn to where the tractor is and 2# a shorter wheelbase allows the rear of the trailer to move laterally faster both going forward and in reverse. Do you agree with this?

Thanks for wishing me luck, but I like to make my own luck.

I'd throw a 3rd one in there... Better ground clearance. Landing gear was the only issue when I last pulled a box, but someone else mentioned skirt clearance, and that's a very valid point, especially at those older, steeper pits.

But sure, #1 was my point in an earlier post, and I just got done explaining why I agreed with #2 a post or two ago.

How does better ground clearance allow you to have less forward space with the tandems slid forward?
