Wondering if anyone has experience with D.O.T. and their physicals?? I’ve been in a big truck since 1983. A few years ago I went to take a physical to return to week after seasonal layoff. They found that I’d either had a heart attack or caught a virus had attacked my heart. You supposed to get disability after ejection fraction gets down to 30%. I was at 14-18%. I got denied 3 times. I went and got an attorney and after waiting a year I got the disability. The amount was avg. of last 3 years work. Those years included 08’-9’and 10’ I bring home $2000 a month but gotta give back $200 for Medicare even though I have great private insurance through my wife job. I feel sorry for guys going through the system without a loyal smart wife. What I wonder has anyone find a way back to work. I feel myself going down the tubes without anything to offer. I was driving under table all the time I was off waiting for dis ability. The end of my arteries came so fast. I did work safely time I was trying to get my disability. I was sick and driving before they find my bad heart but now that I’ve fixed it I still can’t work. Our govt. my single mom went through hell bringing me up. No child support because they told mom they couldn’t find my father. She was to proud to take ADC or any other program. We made it through but my mom worked her ### off. Has anyone seen a way to come back?? Thanks guys hate to be whiny on my first thread. I do have a lot of years in the industry. If I can help anyone.please don’t be afraid to ask. I wanted to drive O.T.R since I was 4 years old. See the country. Trucking paid for my house.fed my kids, put wife through college.Etc.Etc. Just don’t think I should
Be packed away and put on the shelf. I’ve never had a chargeable accident. One speeding ticket,no damage claims. I just want to make a living and show my sons how men support their families. I don’t want charity……Thanks guys and gals for any info you can give.
Why is my country trying to take away my way I support my family.

While I sympathize with your situation I must remind you that a heart problem so serious you are on disability could be a serious issue with the FMCSA. I'm in somewhat the same situation you are in. The state of Virginia took ALL my driving privileges a few years ago. I was warned to not even attempt to ride a bicycle. In your case, I am finding it difficult to understand these two sentences from your post! "I went and got an attorney and after waiting a year I got the disability." and this one "I was sick and driving before they find my bad heart but now that I’ve fixed it I still can’t work" Listen, you either have a heart condition or you do not! From your comments, I think you have two issues. Legally working while on disability and getting a medical card with that heart condition.

Remember. If you have a heart attack driving. That is 80k of death for those people around you.

I had an ejection fraction of 20% after taking chemo for lymphoma. It was a common reaction to the chemo drugs and we were watching for it.
A cardiologist prescribed medication and now it's back to where it should be.
The amount of medication was recently cut in half due to the progress I've made. .
I took an FAA flight physical and a DOT physical while I was taking the full dosage of heart medicine. I passed both and both doctors told me that my meds and my condition didn't preclude me from flying or driving.
See a good cardiologist and tell him what's happening.brian991219, Speed_Drums, Mototom and 5 others Thank this. -

Ejection fraction is treatable but after being granted disability he might have a tough time getting DOT to re-instate him. Hence the suggestion to see a cardiologist. -

I think more people find out they have a health problem after a DOT exam than any other. It's the only time many even go to a doctor. I myself found out I had very high BP, and never knew it. Having a general disgust with the healthcare system in our country today, it's all about money, and the DOT could very well be in cahoots with the healthcare system to "drum up more business" with bogus diagnosis'. How would you know? Best of luck, pal, consider it a blessing.

Story is confusing ... EF in a 14 to 18 percent range will get you referred for a transplant. They referred me when I was at 15%.
I was put on beta blockers an my EF came up to 25% within 6 months. In three years I was at 50%.
9 years later, in 09, I got my CDL and medical card. No issues at that time. In 16 they required a echo stress test for my card. And every year I bring in a letter from my cardiologist giving me a clean bill.
Last echo my EF was up to 65% ... I owe it to the stress free life of an OTR driver.86scotty, Chinatown, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this.
