Why is the fuel so bad in ND, yet fantastic in MT?

Filling up at PFJ...don’t know about the other places. PFJ in Fargo was bad. Mandan was awful. Bad power and MPG, lots of smoke, high EGT’s. Got into Wibaux, Billings, Butte and Superior for fuel (small tank/little truck) and whatever that stuff is they pump in MT is the cat’s ##s. Totally clear like vodka. I went from mid 7’s and 8’s to high 10’s and low 11’s once I flushed all the ND crap out of there. I’ve run this route quite a few times and it ain’t my imagination. I didn’t use to think there was that much difference between fuel but I think I stand corrected. After Superior I made it all the way to Shree’s in George, WA (Toilety little place BTW) and that stuff is so-so...I think it is the Power Service stuff they pump there. Not as good as the Montana stuff but not horrible. WA is generally a bad place to get stuck buying fuel anyway but their price was decent.

Anyway rant off. I figured I would post this in the forum where most of the guys are buying thier own fuel and watch this stuff like a hawk.

Maybe a bad batch... maybe a truck with some screwy emissions component that's about to go, and making it super sensitive to diesel variances

Had (well, still have - it just don't exactly run at the moment) the fastest streetlegal diesel in North America, a BMW 335d, as my daily driver for a while... always lit up CELs and emissions warnings like a #### LED christmas tree.

depending on choice of fueling station, it would either be a balls to the walls, rear tires on fire 4 wheel crotch rocket doing 23 city / 40 highway.... OR a shuddering, sputtering, slowpoke mess pooring soot all over and doing 12 city / 17 highway.

Definitely screwy emissions alphabet soup there, but it'd run grrrrreat on favorite stations' fuel anyway. Even after batches that barely moved it from random other places.

PS doping shuddery crap fuel with profuse amounts of Howe's often drastically improved things

Some Roadys and Ambest put Diesel treat 2000 in their fuel made by Schaeffer's. Some tanks may have water leaking into them, or mud in the tanks.

Did you guys ever call the state to report the problem?

The state will inspect the tank and see what's in it.

Town Pump always has good fuel in MT, not sure what their additive package is but you never have to worry about their fuel. So that probably cleaned out whatever got gunked up from the ND fuel.

Doesn’t seem like Mandan and Fargo would be coming out of the same tank farm, does ND fuel have to be a certain percentage of biodiesel now or anything? I haven’t been up there in a truck forever so I have no idea.

They have 2 types of diesel in ND #1 and 2. probably because of the extreme temps. #1 has less wax so it wont freeze. When I was working in ND I saw dozens of trucks gelled up on the side of the rd.
