Why my CB radio is on all the time, and why yours should be, too

And don't get me started on the "billy big-riggers" with the big radios cranked all the way up and over modulating to the point of forcing people to turn off their radio.

I remember back in the late 80's early 90's time frame pulling into one if the truck stops south of Barstow (76 ???) and hearing the "Big Dong Daddy from Cincinnati" conversing on the CB. I'll never forget that handle.

 

Always have on. I'll chat if I want to. I would keep low enough to hear and sometimes notice the signal meter. It saved me from being stuck in the accident lots of times. I would help drivers for directions. My advice with cb, get decent gear (well known CBs), good coax (not the factory ones), put bigger antennas (rated more than 1000 watts like wilson 2000 or browning coiled 15000 watt antenna, any you can think but not cheap fiberglass at every truck stop), get peaked and tune by local cb shop you may know.

 

Took the cb out of my truck in 1997 cause i hadn't turned it on since 1994 and stopped listening to it in 1991.
Too much foolishness and negativity.

 

I use the SiriusXM phone app AND the Waze GPS traffic app at the same time. I listen to the radio with Waze running in the background, and if there's a problem up ahead (car on the shoulder, police reported, object in the road, accident reported ahead, etc) or I just need to take the next exit, the nice Waze lady automatically lowers the volume of the satrad app and tells me what I need to know and it all comes through my stereo speakers. Kinda the best of both worlds. But granted, she can't tell me which lane to get into to get around the wreck up ahead or whether my rig needs attention.

I used to keep mine on all the time. I remember back when people actually talked on them and would go to different channels to have conversations. These days, I am lucky if I get a response for a radio check...in a truck stop. I have tried to talk to many drivers who are having some sort of problem with their truck, but nothing. I have no idea what changed.

 

I was out of the industry for a long while. When I got back into driving, I started giving reports of what was behind me and asking what to look for ahead of me. I never had anyone respond like they once did. In years past I remember when the Arab folks started driving and keeping the chatter wide open, we would tell them to move it to a different channel. I don't even hear those guys these days. Once in a blue moon, when going by a filled truck stop, if it isn't too late, I may hear a couple of drivers talking.

Heck, I even think I miss hearing if anyone is looking for some commercial. Now that's even gone to the internet and cell phones. (Noticed this at a Pilot in California. Strange...)

 

I wonder whatever happened to the guy in California, I think he was the Reptile Prophet or something. Its been awhile so I may have his title wrong.
