In many ways I think a nonmechanic owner can do a better job at most repairs that a trained professional given he has the tools. Having a vested interest in the equipment makes the difference I used to think. Maybe it’s my background or I think I’m smarter than I am idk. I do know that for the most part if a job is outside the owners scope of knowledge and he doesn’t have access to help he is better off and way cheaper to leave it be. Not all shops are looking to gouge and replace parts. It falls back to a an ol Snap on advertisement “When did you first learn the value of a good mechanic”

You’ll hear something bad on all of em something good on most. Piss any of em off enough and they done with you.

If you have a good one let him do his job. New trucks are not near as scary as when the DEF systems were new. Learning what to do and improvement has helped that.

I agree time off is nice more to life than trucking as long as someone is doing routine maintenance. I have seen many with lots a payments left that was wore plum out. But Harley’s, boats, fake titties, always come first.

 

Today's machining is much more precise and repeatable as well for mass production. What current engine platforms are asked to do would make an engineer's head explode in 1975. Multiple injection cycles per stroke alone would cause their slide rule to smoke, lol.
