I'd be curious to see how much more efficient engines could be with 30 years of advancement in electronics, fuel injection and machining since the days of DDEC 2.

It's pretty sickening to think about.. Let's call a spade a spade though. I'm sure you know but for those that don't my DDEC II was an 11.1L 350hp, in a single screw FLD..

But yes, I've 100% had the same thoughts. Any one of today's engine manufacturers with high pressure fuel injection, tight tolerances, variable vane turbo, & NO epa nonsense on em would have to be near 12mpg, maybe more.?

I for one believe that kind of fuel mileage alone would make a much sense in their "war on oil & gLoBaL WaRmInG"..

They were at the beginning of big improvements when lonox came out. That was estimated to cost 5% loss in power and 5% loss in mpg’s on a 12.7 if I remember correctly. I had my 98 rebuilt in 08, lonox programming, only ran it 50k before wrecking it. Never did find out if mpg suffered. It was a PK engine. Always got good mpg’s. Still got 6 on average all wore out. Running hard. When I first got it, averaged 7.5. Loaded light, I could get it to 9. Pro Driver Computer read 10. The higher it went, the higher the spread. My 99 BK only gets 5.8 average. Got 6.2 last week w/no idle. It should do better.

The 430/470 was the best mpg 12.7. I ran a 11.1 governored 63 set at 325 hp and 1800rpm in an International Cabover. That Truck got over 7 mpg on a Tank of fuel, and I had idled it for 3 days. Never shut it off. It was amazing. My BK used over 1 gal per hour. Maybe 1.1. My PK only used .75 gal per hour. idling. Different pistons, cam, and injectors. I think it’s the mainly the injectors.

Today was a rough day for this M11 I got now. Took 13.5hr in the seat to turn 687 mile, 99 gal, @ 6.93mpg..

    Atlanta was a nightmare,
    Chattanooga an abomination,
    Nashville an abortion,
& at the 117 on i65 just south of KY it was shut down for a fatality & had to detour stop & go for 1.5 hrs on about 9 miles..

I don't idle unless it's in the teens or lower for the most part. But always high idle & my road relay don't show fuel consumption unless at slug idle for some reason.? Not really sure how much per hr she sips..

I was heading south on 65. Had a W9 on the hook. Front end was wrecked bad. Went right past you. M11’s are known for fuel economy.Used to hear of 8-9 mpg. Light loads

Walmart ran a lot of 400 horse m11’s in those old cab overs. Ran a lot of 11 liter Detroits too

I wish I had an old FLD with a 430/470 or a 11.1 liter The fuel economy was always 7 or better. Didn’t matter how you ran. Never shutting it off. Still get 7 mpg.
