The shippers I go to are all very strict. One uses facial recognition, and you sign the BOLS with your face lol.
Most require an orientation to enter the premises, you get a card good for a year. Then present card when you come.
All have stories of guys trying to load without the endorsement. Not Landstar, other companies.
Why pay Landstar over 30% of the load when you can have 100% with your own numbers?

As far as insurance cost at LS the only insurance you have to provide is unladen liability (bobtail). Insurance on your truck and trailer is none of their business, they offer it but you can buy cheaper elsewhere.
There are so many people in this business that don’t fully understand fully how things work.
They offer a insurance kind of like workers comp, one would be stupid to not take it to protect their self and their family.
All General liabilty and cargo is covered by LS.tommymonza and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Occupational Accident coverage is mandatory.
"1. What are the minimum requirements to become a Landstar BCO?
For tractor-trailer, expedited, and hotshot owner-operators, the minimum requirements are:
- 23+ years old
- Class A CDL (Class A CDL or Class B CDL for Expedited)
- Hazmat endorsement
- One year verifiable OTR experience (6 months verifiable OTR experience for Expedited or Hotshot)
- One season verifiable snow and ice experience
- Verifiable driving history
- No DOT-recordable/preventable accident in past 12 months
- No serious violations in past 36 months, including reckless driving or careless endangerment
- No DUI in past 60 months
- Overall safe driving record
- Felony and misdemeanor charges reviewed case-by-case
- No positive drug or alcohol tests
- Provide and maintain proper levels and types of approved insurance during your lease with Landstar including:
- Unladen Liability and Occupational Accident coverage or, in some cases, statutory Workers’ Compensation coverage, are mandatory. If you do not participate in the Unladen Liability and/or CPP (Occupational Accident insurance) programs facilitated by Landstar, you must show comparable Unladen Liability coverage and/or Occupational Accident coverage through acceptable insurance carriers.
- If statutory Workers’ Compensation coverage is required and you do not participate in the Fleet Workers’ Compensation Plan (FWCP) program, coverage must be provided by licensed carriers with acceptable interstate coverage.

When I leased on it wasn’t required, but I also worked 6 weeks before I went to orientation.
Things change.whoopNride Thanks this. -
I don't know. I thought I was starting to figure Landstar out, but now this thread has me very confused.
I'm being unloaded atm. Then I'm gonna scan my BOL's, which I already have back signed, then I'm gonna hit home runs for two weeks that I already have booked.
This thread is confusing the cats as well.kbarttt, whoopNride and taodnt Thank this. -
right now they are taking 138.00 a week and that has the base plates and permits then monthly they take out the eld which is 22.50 I think and once a month they take out 230.00 for "liability insurance " and it wouldn't suprise me if you guys had it different. .. also I have my truck valued at 50000 and I know that makes a difference ... I get everything through them ..... and I don't think they want you to totally figure it out
