Why pay Landstar over 30% of the load when you can have 100% with your own numbers?

That isn't the reason. They required hazmat long before the government required a background check for the endorsement.

A LS guy above mentioned it and it made sense to me. So what's the reason then?

I have kept my haz-mat but it's basically useless to me as I haven't worked with a company in about 7 years now to where I could use it. It's a money racket that I will probably drop the next time it comes up for renewal. They need new fingerprints every 5 years for $90 because you know how your finger prints are subject to changing without notice and all of that. Lol...

Honestly IMO there ought to be a LOT more of little poison pill like bureaucratic nonsensical $$$$ hoops like that one to keep people from getting into this business period. Nickel and dime new entrants with government fees to the point they feel it's not worth it.

I have no idea. I'm guessing to eliminate the risk of a guy getting a hazmat load without the endorsement.

Profited from the fall out of that..... I've gotten a few good rate loads cause the non-LS driver originally booked for the load did not have Haz endorsement.

Me: "Yep I talked with you about that load......"

Agent: "(long winded cancellation info from agent) ..... The broker is desperate to cover"

Me: "Well I can do it but it's going to cost $4200 not the $3500 you listed it for yesterday. This other load around the corner pays $4000"

Agent: "Just a sec.......... Done for $4400. If that works for you; your Truck number?"

That seems logical. I guess sometimes HAZMAT can be found in places one wouldn't normally expect.

My experience is that the drivers/dispatchers do not even know what it is. Or that you need extra insurance to carry it. I've witnessed several turned away at the shipping window.

I know it can jump up to 5 million but not sure where that threshold is.
