Why pay Landstar over 30% of the load when you can have 100% with your own numbers?

As much as they can. How much depends on your negotiating ability and service record.

By law they must share the invoice with any contractor that requests it.

There are several similar services like that. Ranging from load boards specific for shippers and uber. Not a single one of them has ever had a load worth pulling. If a shipper wants to cut out the broker they certainly arent going to be doing so in order to pay the truck more.

If you have your own authority, and, for the sake of argument, your own direct customers: they pay cheap rates on 90 day terms.... pointless not to be leased to a place that has good paying freight, that you'd otherwise not be able to get ahold of.
Ie landstar and other large brokerages have customers that would be hard to pull as a small carrier or solo OO; but leased to those brokerage carriers, you can get access to those customers freight.

That said, if you have good paying customers or are a good negotiator with brokers in a pinch, you'd be in a better position to be on your own independently.

I leased to a % based carrier for a while when I bought my first tractor. It was a good learning experience. I left for a few reasons, and would have happily leased to another carrier that could get me home daily or offer me the opportunity to make more money. However I did not find any carriers in my area that could offer those two things together, or either of those things separately. I went independent figuring if I didn't succeed at either of those goals, I could always go back to the situation that I had just left.
I have a reasonable understanding of what running a business entails, and have gotten to a point that I'm home a lot of the time and make one hell of a lot more than I would make leased to a carrier.
10 years ago I never would have guessed what I am doing today would be even possible.

Focusing lots of your time money or effort thinking about "what the other guy is doing" is a wasted effort imo if you're talking. About what % the carrier or broker keeps. It's a good idea to know those figures, but if that money doesn't come to you, it's not nearly as relevant as what money DOES come to you.
Some carriers pay 90%... some pay 65%. 90% of a buck is $0.90: 65% of 4 bucks is $2.60. Which is a better number to be making?

If you go independent to only pull loadboard freight... I won't say it's impossible to be successful: certainly seems less likely tho, compared to leasing to a carrier with good paying accounts or going independent and having some good paying accounts of your own.

Most direct customers don’t want to deal with a bunch of carriers... they want to make 1 phone call and have everything covered.......

Kinda hard as a 1-2 truck show........

I assume that LS charges for trailers and if you run your own numbers trailers are free..
That is the way most comparisons are made.

Somehow LS has 9400 plus trucks with a 28% turnover rate, must work for some,

Some drivers are just that , drivers. They drive the truck and they let landstar handle the "Business" end of things.

And they are FREAKED the turnover is above 15%.
That’s why the hire on process is so F'd.
They do it deliberately because they are looking for a certain type of individual.

My liability & workman's comp insurance is $3500 year.

What's your's with your own numbers going to be the first few years?

Mine covers anything from rubber dog crap to plutonium.

    The money flows.

And I just do van. Company van!!

My goal this year is $150K. To me, all overhead paid.
    I think I'll be nearer $130's.

How I get it, that no sweat off anyone's balls but my own.

My phone has rang three times while I've posted this with loads I can make a few thousand on for a 2 day run.
    AND, that's 2-1/2 weeks out!!!!
That's how far I'm planned out lol.

And like it's been explained 65% of 1,000 is still a lot more than 600 from DAT.

    tlalokay Thanks this.
