Not everyone comes has family who drive or grew up on a farm or whatever. Maybe *you* don't need a school, because you have access to equipment and experienced people to help teach you.

I'm actually glad I went to school, a certified/approved school (Community College).
We had the first 3 weeks in a class room and studied books and watched a lot of videos, most of them to make us aware of the danger and consequences of making a wrong decision. A lot of old drivers still know what they're doing but I've seen a lot of new drivers texting, not keeping a safe distance, driving too fast for the road conditions and so on.
So, does school makes a difference these days? IMO Yes it does.

You know it's because of the insurance companies. But if you were to come to me and you didn't have the basic training down I'd have to let you go because I don't have the time to teach you logs, rules and regulations, truck inspection, and everything else you should know from school. I want to refine those skills so you can be an asset to the company and also so you can be a better driver. Your training never stops and I would want you to know that and where to go to enhance your skills and knowledge. You come to me with I know what I'm doing and it's out the door for you. Unless of course if you have a few years driving with a clean record. Unless your family takes a few weeks off to train you I wouldn't want to see you.

No you don't have to go to school. You can get your CDL-A with a learner's permit from your state that you live in. You have to find a driver with a CDL-A to train you then after that and the written test that you may have to take first. Then you have to go back to the state CDL people to take the driving test. You can find out all that info by going to you local state CDL office and get a booklet.
