"But some people are always searching for reason to be offended by something even if they have to fabricate it."

Way to insult my friends and family - thanks. The Sambo's location on the border of Clute and Lake Jackson, Texas was a "company franchised location", where the "owner" was more of a manager who leased the business from corporate. We know the family who owned/franchised the location since 1953..and my parents were close to these people when the transfer between Little Black Sambos, Sambos, and Dennys occured.

It offends my black friends, so I go to IHOP or whatever... and my friends and family aren't the kind of people who need to search out reasons to be offended.

Correct, I just looked it on 'WIKIPEDIA'.:book:Denny's bought some of the old Sambo's chain, but they were separate businesses. Most of the old 'SAMBOS' became a 'SEASONS' chain. The original 'SAMBOS' remains open in California.
It is true that 'DENNY"S' was the subject of a many million dollar lawsuit for racial discrimination. They lost.:error:

    Still do not like them.

Blackw900, thanks for that post. I was going to post something similar. Sambo's and Denney's were in competition when I first went to California. FWIW, I thought the food sucked in BOTH places back then.

It seemed like Denney's was the "bottom of the barrel" for a lot of years, then they sort of got better. Now, they seem like they are back on the bottom again. . .

According to WIKIPEDIA, the name for SAMBO'S eatery came from joining the names of the 2 founders. Mr. {SAM} Battistone and Mr. Newell {BO}hnett. Hence 'SAMBO'S'. Nothing racial there.:biggrin_25512:
I always thought the kid's story was just that / a kid's story. No racial overtones, did not think of the kid as black, thought of him as a kid.:biggrin_25513:

    You're welcome!

If you choose to see it as an insult then I would include you in the ranks of people that are "looking for something to be offended by".

That's nice but it never happened...There was NEVER a "little Black Sambos" and Sambos never evolved into Dennys!

It didn't happen, It's not true.

    Apparently they are...

I have family members that are black too but they are not the type to get all pissy over things that occurred (or as in this case didn't occur) 50 or 60 years ago when people were not as educated as they are now about matters pertaining to race.

Here's a little more history for you....

"Sambo's is a restaurant, formerly an American restaurant chain, started in 1957 by Sam Battistone and Newell Bohnett. Though the name was taken from portions of the names of its founders, the chain soon found itself associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo. Battistone and Bohnett capitalized on the coincidence by decorating the walls of the restaurants with scenes from the book, including a dark-skinned boy, tigers and a pale, magical unicycle-riding man called "The Treefriend." By the early 1960s, the illustrations depicted a light-skinned boy wearing a jeweled Indian-style turban with the tigers. A kids club, Sambo's Tiger Tamers (later called the Tiger Club), promoted the chain's family image.
By 1979, Sambo's had 1,200 outlets in 47 US states. However, in the late-1970s, controversy over the chain's name drew protests and lawsuits in communities that viewed the term Sambo as pejorative towards African-Americans, particularly in the Northeastern states." [/QUOTE]

I love those smothered cheese fries they have. Other than that, it's another chain restaurant. I suppose they're about on par with the rest of them.

I dislike Denny's because when there,I cant help but to remember what they replaced..No,I did not buffet everyday, but the breakfast buffet on weekends were a treat..Also,I fuel mostly at the "J",and most of my meals were free with the card set-up they had in place..That's my reason, and I'm stickin to it..
