Not knowing all about this type of work I have to ask. Let me state this emphatically: truckdad I know you know your way around. (1) ability and equipment to repair whose tires, (2) carry blocks for what, (3) carry extra diesel for who, (4) have the ability to load any equipment, (5) ice chest stocked with what.

If it was MY pilot car, repair the trucks/trailers tires, doesn't hurt to have a few spare blocks, 5 gal of gas or diesel for me or truck. Ice chest? Why, Gin & tonic & limes of course.

OK. Here we go. You hired an escort, not a service man or a babysitter. I will come with everything I need to do my job. You bring what you need to do yours. Y'all make the statement about being on your A game. Then you need to be able to fix a tire, not run out of fuel, and not be consuming alcoholic beverages when you have equipment to check for tomorrow, maps to go over, route to discuss, and get to bed at a reasonable hour. Some of this I say in jest but really. I'm here to escort and not babysit. You guys get the big bucks. Suck it up and do your job.
Seriously, as an escort I would not expect to carry extra diesel for you, fix a tire for you or be expected to help. You can put your booze in my ice chest if that helps to keep the peace. I will not be held responsible if any goes missing.

You realize Truckdad had his own truck and private escort vehicle? We run a private truck too, when I pulled the 9 axle full time I we ran our own escort truck. It had 110 gallon fuel tank, blocking, tools and whatever else we needed.

 

Many would not understand my point. If I were to go into the pilot car business (and I gave it some thought after I sold out) I would make sure I was on top of the list. What better way to be a #1 pilot car service than to offer a little extra service while on the road? Like the ability to change or repair tires, offer REAL help to the driver, be able to load a machine while the driver sacks out? I think a pilot driver like that would be in great demand.
