Is the power down too? Loose connections at the turbo could cause more noise, but you'll notice a drop in power. If the bearings are going south, I think it will growl and not whistle. If the bearings go, the seals will too and it will leak oil. In any case, if the turbo let's go, it ain't pretty.

It really depends on what failed in the turbo and what clamps and seals gave way.

How can any one tell when an EGR goes bad?
There are many different symptoms that can be given off if an EGR valve bites the dust.
    1. Loss of engine power (derate)
    2. Loss of or reduction in Jake Brake
    3. Huge amount of smoke coming out of the stack(s)
    4. Erratic idling. (RPM jumps up and down)
There are probably plenty more that drivers/owners have experienced with a bad EGR valve

How many of you do know when a turbo goes bad and why?

There are a variety of things that can tell you when the turbo is bad or is on the way out. I have heard them whine when you get on the throttle, reduction in boost, and blown oil.

I guess the easiest thing to do is tell us what problem are you having?

Bearing going out in the turbo. Usually if its the turbo you will see dampness spots around the turbo but usually if its making a noise its going bad. One went out on me while I was going down I75, looked like a big fireball of smoke going down the road.

Depends on the sound. My old ISX cm870 would make a loud pop/cough sound when the egr was actting up. Its actually compressor stall that makes that sound.

Most likely the bearing or the turbo mounting gasket. Feel around the base of the turbo where it mounts to the manifold. If you feel a sharp edge sticking out that is the blown gasket. If it is smooth then take off your air to air hose and look and feel inside of it. If there is oil or an oily residue, the turbo is shot, get it fixed fast. If you put off getting it fixed you are risking a runaway. Keep a big plastic garbage bag with you to use to choke the air intake if it happens. Its the only way to stop the engine once the runaway starts.

If the end of the turbo is exposed, and if you have a bad bearing, you will be able to wiggle the end of the shaft up, down and sideways. if you have that wiggle, dont wait, get it serviced NOW!
