Sorry I guess I shouldn't have quoted you specifically, what i meant is some guys don't know it's illegal to "X" chains on a suicide coil and not just preference. My driver was one of them and I had to print off the law to prove it.

I don't think we need a law like Alabama has but I see too many guys that should probably leave the coils to the guys with brains and go back to pulling a van.:biggrin_2559:

With coils, or any freight really, there is no such thing as too much securement. If i didnt feel safe, id throw another chain or too myself.

You'd never make it as a coil hauler in today's world! You're too concerned about safety and doing it right. 3/8" chains on a coil in today's worls is non-existent as would be 6 chains on a legal weighted coil.

    You're a dinosaur Krooser...but that's OK in my books!

As a rule with 3/8" chain you should use 1 chain for every 8k lbs . If you are doing this with 3/8" or 1/4" you are risking peoples lives.

Take your thumb and stick it back where you had it. 3/8 G70 chain is DOT rated for 6,600 #WLL. Legally you only need enough chain for 1/2 the coil weight with a minimum of 2 chains per coil (over 5k). 78,640/2=39,320#/6,600=5.95 chains. Also chains at a greater angle than 45* to the trailer floor are also prohibited so I could have put 30 chains but they wouldn't have counted since they would have been spread out too far to be legal. It might make you feel warm and fuzzy to put 2 times the required securement but with a single that size you need to remember all the chains are still connected to the same side rail.:biggrin_25525:

If I were you I'd me more concerned with the guys hauling skidded coils in vans with ZERO securement. The only thing keep the coils in the trailer is a sheet of plywood and an aluminum skin.:yes2557:

Sorry didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Guess I need to spend more time on the couch. Do you always have such a problem with those that have a different opinion than you? I still say you are risking peoples lives if you are securing 78k lb coils with 6 3/8" chains but then I'm only a wannabe.

Dont think its so much a problem with different opinions as it does with having a grasp on reality.

Risking peoples lives ? :biggrin_2554: you 10spd clowns are hilarious:biggrin_25521:
