They did what they could. There were trucks parked on Northbound 81 from Glade Springs to the 77/81 split. There wasn't a nearby safe place to head to.
And alot of them probably had to deal with deskjockey stupidity in the form of company policy on top of asinine HOS regs.
Why you don't stop on the shoulder!

I remember our safety idiots sending me nastygrams for going over 60 hours when we were limited to that back then.
“No, I didn’t drive after the stroke of 60, so you can take this and wipe something with it.”
Not my fault idiots can’t read.spyder7723 and TripleSix Thank this. -

Point is, if there is a verifiable traffic stoppage(and in today's world of a highway gets shut down there is going to be a record of it) you will not get a ticket or put out of service for going over your 14 in order to get to safe parking. Parking on the shoulder of the interstate is not safe parking, and I'm fairly certain its flat out illegal. But it better be a legitimate unusable event, like a couple winters back i spent over 30 freaking hours on 65 just south of Louisville due to the road being blocked. Was not on elogs at the time but logged it all on duty and when they finally got us moving i didn't find safe parking until i was in Florence ky. Why did i log it all on duty? Cause that road closure was national news and i didn't want to risk an officer catching i was in the area at the time it happened and give me a ticket for falsifying my logs.Brickwall Thanks this. -
