Just as well you mentioned "obviously everyone is different" as not everyone will owe money on truck or trailer repayments and that is the big difference here which amounts to $1000 although you've calculated that by the trip where as most truck payments would be weekly, fortnightly or monthly, so a person without any debts would make around $1500 profit per trip on 2000 mile run, which is pretty good, obviously if one can get paid more than $2 per mile that's an added bonus. This is why a company like Swift with around 1000 vehicles can run on such low margins do the maths even if there only making $500 profit considering if there paying $0.50 per mile to the driver that's a whopping $ 500 000 in the kitty every 2 days for the company.

I’ve been sitting back and avoiding all of these threads for the most part. My guess is a good many of the folks who are discounting the choppiness of the waters are going to end up having an eye opener before it’s all over. I really do.

I’m happy that so many people made a mountain of loot and hopefully paid off equipment, but that only means that ultimately the hard times are going to be even harder then what is the normal downturn.

I respect a great number of folks on here, it’s just there seems to be quite a few that either don’t know their real numbers and/or don’t fully grasp just how bad things can get. My guess a lot of trucks and hot tubs are going to get sold before it’s all over.

The point of this thread was you won't make much money running around for $2 a mile with new trucks $200,000 and fuel at $5.50-$6 a gallon among other ridiculous costs now.

I agree with this statement. If that was the point we got way off in the weeds.

It didn't get so far off track and off topic that it got sent to Politics. I thought that was pretty good.

That's not taking maintenance and repairs into consideration. The price and availability of parts, supplies and services are getting out of hand. Combined they will quickly eat away at that 50k. Let's not forget about taxes too. We average about 33 percent or more in total income taxes. And how about the thousands of dollars in permits, IRP, IFTA, HUT etc etc? That all adds up too. Your 50k will easily be more like 15-20k in your pocket if you're lucky once it's all said and done.

Here in my area, diesel went up by 30c-40c per gallon - over the over the weekend. Can you believe that?!
This week, outbound rates, depending on where directed, are at 3-3.5 in the 300-600 mile range - it may be less depending on the deadhead.
Due to the fact, that the fuel is even more expensive and the rates are stagnant, it is going to be hard to endure summer heat in the Midwest without idling or APU. It may be even cheaper to park it at a cheap motel and spend a night there.
