It's gone up more than 50 cents/gallon in my area over the last week.

Do people take 2 dols per mile freight as a result of their ignorance or stupidity? The answer is no.

2 dol per mile is not a choice, it is a result, a decision vector if you will.

Why do I take 2 dols per mile freight?

I took one coming back from Philadelphia to Chicago - 800 miles or so. It was a heavy load 43 000lbs and I took I 76 and OH, IN tollways. After fuel and the tolls, I ended up with maybe $500 to the truck...on that return leg, that is.

Why? Why? Because I prebooked it and did not like the idea of bouncing off or going back empty-handed if waited until the very last moment. With this expensive diesel, deadheading over 700 miles is suicidal.
See, they paid me decent going that way...$3400 on 850 miles from SE Wisconsin and I wanted to get home over the weekend ASAP. That's a dry van. With my limited skills, it was a premium rate.

I took it because without it, the first leg would have made little sense. I took it because they both combined gave me revenue from which I could still squeeze some juice.

Nobody in their right mind would leave Chicago for Philadelphia for 2 dols per mile...but it may happen that the backhaul choice might be unfortunate and extremely limited, with a possible cheap freight out of there, you may arithmetically end up with 2 dols per mile both ways but that is the result of a given game deal at that point, not by any means a choice.

There wasn't anything closer to Chicago you could have picked up to net you at least 500 dollars?

These days, you are best off securing the load as soon as you find something to put you out of there unless you don't care about a specific direction of reloading. As a matter of fact, while I was at the shipper, there were better loads showing up that very moment but who would have thought? More than once I deadheaded back home from there, hoping to stumble upon something in OH but it does not always work. Prebooking is the safe way but the downside is that it may not be the optimal rate for that very day of picking up. One could always bounce off in favor of something else, sometimes I do too but never a few hours before the pickup. There is a karma aspect too, you think you bounced off for a better load because the money seemed better, but the load proved to be a disaster and you'd rather pay someone to take it back from you than stay on it.

you should not show this stuff here because it makes me turn on my grill too but it's gas...you can't get the same results on a gas grill, even if you add some wet wood chips on the side, can you?!

Depending on your grill. Some have an insert for a charcoal section
We have one for our gas grill and use it when we have the little extra time
Easy to light too since you just fire the burner and the coal box is on top of that
