Didn’t read much past the first few posts. I guess in regards to the original post, what’s the point of leasing to carrier if you have to pay liability and cargo and insure their trailer all just to chase scraps on load boards? I always thought the whole point of leasing to a carrier was to gain access to their direct freight?

Side question - I thought when you leased on, (like Landstar for example), you had to at least pay for insurance? Do they cover it out of their pocket, and that's part of the percentage you "lose"? I know you have to be under their policy, but I thought you had to pay for it.

I pay the insurance for my truck and I have a bailee policy to cover the trailer I pull because I’m the only one on my friend’s authority that doesn’t pull one of his trailers. He’s always paid his liability and cargo policies, I figured that was standard practice as part of the percentage. If you leased on and still had to pay all that stuff then you might as well get your own authority in my opinion, because really you’re only one step removed from being on your own at that point.

So part of that percentage goes to paying for insurance?? Plus they do all kinds of other stuff. It looks pretty attractive, to be honest.

Unfortunately many carriers are shady and tons of info about that on these boards.
For example carriers only giving good paying loads to company drivers and leaving the junk to the owner operators.
Or they set up separate company to broker loads to themselves and then you get a percentage of a percentage of whatever they decide.
Or worse which sadly I've experienced in my career the carrier will photoshop rate cons and make up whatever rate they decide to tell you the customer is paying.

Nobody said you have to take scrapes on the load board. The key is to post your truck.

Another “the sky is falling” post, lol.

Fact is, rates have normalized. Problem now is the high cost of fuel..

There's nothing shady about that. Giving scraps to the load board and giving the good loads to your company is a good thing. If someone wants to pull the overflow, then that's their business.

Just for fun, here’s some numbers. They’re all my true numbers except for the low 1.70 per mile to the truck. Anyway….

    revenue to truck is 4250
Fuel is 1575 (63 cents per mile)
Maintenance at 375 though on a new truck that’s high but I’ll play along
    Insurance (truck and bailee) 112
    Payment (weekly) 554
    Trailer rent 185

That leaves 1449. Not killing it but still 5800 a month. Maybe less time off to balance everything out.
