So I was on i80 east in Wyoming approaching i25. I am governed at 62. Sure Wish I had a Faster Truck. This truck hauling a swimming pool comes up behind me. He looks to be about 14 ft wide. He had a pilot car behind him, someone might be able to use this to judge his width better.
There is a fast lane, a slow lane, and a shoulder on the right and no other cars. What's the best way to let him pass?

Stay right. Give as much room as you safely can. Straddle the fog line if possible

Some things about etiquette and safety around OD or HWH loads, if YOU are going to pass make SURE you don't pass in lane restricted areas, like narrow bridges or construction zones. DON'T get in between the pilot cars and the big load, as in if you are making a pass don't just pass the rear pilot car and then get back over behind the big load. Don't block the pilot car's view of the load.
Help out big loads if you can. A couple years ago I was on a three lane interstate with construction going on for 20 miles. With concrete barriers on both outside lanes a wide load had to take all of the right lane and half the middle lane. Cars AND trucks were constantly jockeying in position to get into the hammer lane to pass, getting between the load and the pilot cars and sometimes trying to squeeze two abreast on the pass. I was in the right lane, biding my time behind, but when I realized the idiocy going on I pulled up to a trucker biding his time in the middle lane. We hand signaled to let each other know the plan, we set up a rolling road block in the right two lanes to stop cars and trucks trying to use all three lanes in and around the rear pilot car for the last 10 miles.Ryan423 and TROOPER to TRUCKER Thank this. -
