Must be nice. I live in Alabama and the minimum wage is $7.25/hr. Good luck finding a job that pays more than $15/hr too with a high school diploma. Oh, and guess what? The average rent IN ALABAMA is over $1,000.. this state ####ing sucks and I'm glad I'm following my wife while she's travel nursing.
The McDonald's right down the street from me starts at $12/hr.. chic fila starts at $8.50....

Hmmm....a recruiter will tell you anything, but the reality is that what your trying to do isn't realistic at all. If you want to be near your wife at all times(which I can definitely respect and admire), you'll need to settle where she is for each contract, or consider going OTR, preferably a company that runs all 48. If your domicile is going to be Alabama, you need to be based there. When you get a CDL, you'll have to give up some things, whether you run regional, OTR, or even local. All CDL jobs are long hours and pretty demanding. I just don't see a scenario where you'll be able to find a local or regional job consistently. You're looking to find a local/regional job every 6 months, that's asking a lot. Do OTR. You'll have a better chance at seeing your wife more that way than to job hop in the freight recession.

20 bucks an hour really goes no where, much less in California. In my opinion, that should be minimum wage. That's dialogue for another day though.

What's the MEDIAN rent, though? That's a more accurate depiction.

Example... 99 places at $500-1000 and 1 beachfront penthouse at $50,000 gives an average of $1242.50, whereas the median would be $750, a more accurate depiction of the market as a whole.

Alabama consistently ranks as one of the most affordable states in which to reside.

    Oops. Here's the actual numbers:
My father has several rental properties in "LA" (Lower Alabama). He would LOVE to charge over $1,000 average, but the market doesn't support your narrative.

Does your father have property in a rural, less populated area?

This where I live, and all the available nearby apartments. #### near unaffordable..
Your father must have places for rent in a very rural part of Alabama, miles away from jobs that pay more than minimum wage.

Yeah, Montgomery is a very dangerous place.. I sure as hell don't stop to even get gas there. It's just like Memphis.. I ride on by. You couldn't PAY me to live in Montgomery.
