some "techie drivers" (who are also common thieves) have downloaded cracking apps that will use their high-end video card processing chip to crack wi-fi access codes to hack into secured wi-fi. Not saying this is what happened, just saying it can happen. But there are multiple other ways a device can be "hacked" to gain access to your data allotment ...

I always turn mine off when I'm done, this is the absolute best safe-guard you can implement. Disabling broadcast of the SSID name might be helpful, too. Plus, for added security you can go into the device (if available) and limit access to the device from ONLY certain MAC addresses (such as your computer/laptop only) but be careful how you do this as it can create problems for you later if you lose a laptop and buy another and need in to add new laptop. Learn how to do a "Reset" of the device to factory default in case you get in a jam trying to get into the security settings and find yourself locked out.

Also, change the device configuration password to something besides the default. Any tech savvy person can otherwise log in as the default admin account and allow themselves access (remove MAC access security) to the WAN side if they can see the SSID broadcast name.

But you have to be careful with a laptops's auto-update feature. Sometimes this will actually turn the laptop on at 02:00, run the check, and download updates if available, then apply, then turn back off. But this can be changed to not allow this. In fact I recommend you turn off all auto-updates of your OS, any printer drivers, graphics card drivers, etc that may also check for updates on a schedule. Then make sure to apply any updates manually when you get home.

Not for hotspot tethering. I use Easy Tether for a carrier branded phone. For a Hotspot device, your out of luck.

TMobile = Unlimited High Speed Data. Limits to 5 gig tethered, but I rooted my phone and installed a different wifi router app. Now unlimited high speed data tethered. Period. Too easy.

Which Wi-Fi app are you using? I'm rooted, but the one I have turns off Bluetooth when active (I would like to still talk on the phone with the headset).

in today's world, where everybody and their dog is hacking everybody and the family and their dog, cat, and fish. i always turn my hotspotS off. but i've been known to forget.

my sprint phone is nothing but my copilot gps, and UNLIMITED hotspot tethering. WITHOUT paying the extra added fee. it dont use any data, but there's really nothing on it to use it except for weatherbug.

verizon on the other hand. seems to be my problem child. 2 months ago, day 1 of the new billing cycle, i downloaded the updated copilot. and my 6 gigs was all used up. for a 2 gig map. good thing for my sprint phone. my verizon phone was over the limit for the next 30 days.

but i seriously thinking my phone came with a bug. any emails that get sent to my aol account. get pinged back with a trojan spam. only on my aol account. and only when the verizon phone is turned on. happend the day i bought the phone. my sprint phone dont have the issue. and they're both the same models.
