Talk to smaller carriers as well. I did this with my son when he turned 18. He ran Ohio . The two problems will be freight and insurance, my kid has a spotless driving record except for a failure to secure load citation. He was moving a truck bed liner and didn’t tie it down, it blew out when a semi passed him. It struck another vehicle and knocked a mirror off. We paid the repair bill out of pocket, never turned it in to insurance. State trooper showed up and made report and wrote non moving violation ticket for securement. That was the only thing on his record. Carriers insurance , progressive, found it and insurance doubled. The freight problem is that as an intrastate driver you are not supposed to be doing anything with interstate freight. If the load is originating or terminating outside your state you aren’t supposed to move it . No shuttling it to the state line and swapping wagons etc. it’s supposed to be true intrastate freight. Now we followed that rule to the letter at my old outfit and never violated it ever not once honest to goodness never even THOUGHT of violating it never (sarcasm for those slower folks). But it can be done. The kid actually did do a fair amount of true intrastate freight but he also took a fair number of breaks at truck stops near state lines. Anyways there are some hurdles but we were able to massage the intrastate restrictions because we were are a small 6 truck operation. But the situations do exist. One legit thing the kid did do was pull out of the Menards distribution center in Holiday City Ohio to their in state stores. Maybe something like that. Menards uses outside carriers to move their trailers

Your best bet is Chinatown, he could be very busy. The man does this for a lot of drivers on his own time. He is not obligated to help anyone, but he does , you just have to be patient. and see what happens.

You may have to look outside of PA to find a job. I'm trying to find an article that I saw a while back. There were companies that started participating in that government program to train 18 year olds. One company in particular was in Ohio, and even with the program, that owner still could not attract drivers. It's not a well known company, but once I stop later, I'll try to find that article because the company name is in it.

Apply to Wilkes Barre DPW. It’s not class A work but if driving a garbage truck interest you, you’ll receive good pay, with great benefits and a pension with lots of PTO. Just throwing it out there.

This company was mentioned in the article, and seems willing to take you on. Check this website out, and give these guys a call. See if they're still willing to take you and train you.
