once i obtain my authority...will brokers and shippers shy away from me since my authority will be so new...will it be hard for me to get loads...also will the fact that I do have a for hire passenger authority with no failed dot inspections and a satisfactory rating from the fmcsa for the past 15 months possibly make any difference...I simply don't know...also can I bring a truck in under the same dot and mc number as my motor coach...I know there's a different application procedure for obtaining a truck authority so can have I have a for hire truck authority and a for hire passenger authority under the same dot number...can someone please give me some sound advice.

OOIDA was a HUGE help to me when I first started. I highly recommend you join asap as they have so many resources and great discounts on a lot of things you are going to need. The magazines they send you ( no charge ) alone are well worth your membership dues, plus you need to no about the fights for truckers rights. a fantastic organization... p.s. good luck.

If you obtain new authority just for the truck you probably will have trouble getting some companies to give you freight. I know when I first started out LS would not allow me to book freight for 2 years. After 2 years everything was good. There was also a few others that will give you trouble but I was able to find something else. But yes for the first year or two it can be a little rough.

Not that I don't agree that joining OOIDA is worth it as I do but using the magazine to justify the cost does not make any sense as you can get a subscription to LandLine for free at https://www.ooida.com/secure/Subscriptions/index.asp even if you are not a member. I did so for several years before joining.

The list of befits of joining are found at http://www.ooida.com/BenefitsServices/Services/.

what would you suggest is the best way to start out....will I still get enough loads to operate...how do I get around the "being a new authority" label and still make pretty decent money

Yes you will be able to make it. Will you make decent money? Lets just say you should be able to pay your bills, provided you dont have some huge truck payment and an exorbitant overhead. You shouldn't have issues, it wasn't that bad for me, I just found sometimes I couldn't go where I wanted to go. Like I said it was only 2 years at the maximum before I was able to haul for a company, it really isn't that long.

I am not sure if you can go under the same authority as you motor coach, you would have to ask for clarification. If you are since that is established I would go that route provided the record is clean. It will cost you less than starting a new authority.
