So I've been wanting to get my CDL for some time, and I was starting school next month.
I just got rear ended at a light. Nothing I could have done, there was traffic on both sides of me. It was quite a bit of damage, the other vehicle was pretty obviously totaled. The other driver was cited. Luckily there were no injuries.
But asking around with some truckers I know, they say I won't get a job as a new trucker with an accident within a year, even if I'm not at fault. Is that true?
On top of that I already had a careless driving/accident on my record from about 5 years ago. No injuries, just some light damage on both cars. It was in my personal vehicle. It was partially weather related, but I know that is no excuse, the officer felt I was more at fault than the other party so I got the ticket.
I figured I MIGHT find a job with a 5 year old ticket considering I drive at work all day, and only had one negative report of my license. But now that I have that, and a brand new accident, I'm not feeling very confident. I would hate to go to school, then have to sit out a couple years and pay for a refresher before I could start making my money back. Do you guys think I'm still hireable?
Will a not at fault accident count against me?

I would think so. They go back 3 years on your DMV report. Just tell your recruiter and they should know.

You weren't cited so I don't even see a reason to mention it.
Do mention the 5 year old one - IF they ask. Every company has their own policy. Some will ask if you've been cited in the last 3 years. Some say the last 5. -
if you werent cited you should be safe even if you felt obligated on telling them. The careless driving is a must to let them know. I was involved in a bad accident way back when and when I went to work for JB they just needed proof that I was not at fault so I sent them the accident report. You shouldnt have a problem with it but they might want to see a report if it was filed.

As other have stated, if you weren't cited, don't mention it. My company only goes back 3 years, so you should be good on both fronts.
bullhaulerswife Thanks this.
