From my research I'm getting the idea that many company sponsored driver training schools are closing up shop. CSA 2010? Insurance companies? Too many poorly trained newbies? All of the above?

Too many people bailing/getting fired and then not able to pay back 1,000's in tuition?
It's like if a bank gave home loans to people they knew couldn't make the monthly payments.. but that would be silly :biggrin_25526:

    Are you kidding?

These schools are just like a lease/fleece program.
There's money in them thar hills!
These bottom feeder companies don't need to haul freight, they have these people keeping them in big houses and expensive cars and vacations in foreign countries!

Just like everything else in life that's a SHAM these schools will disappear because they don't work, are overpriced and the return is dismal.

The return is not at the school, the school is a write off (literally)(might even be subsidized). The return is on the bottom line when they take advantage of newbies, paying them substandard wages and keeping them prisoners in a leased truck. It doesn't cost them a dime to park a paid for truck with unpaid drivers to wait for freight.
As long at there is a steady stream of hungry wheel holders to replace the burnouts the scheme is self supporting. When (if) freight gets better this places them in an excellent position to further profit, short term gains is the only goal.

It seems to me that what you're saying is that strategic placement of empty tractors/trailers and idle drivers serves to put the company in position to capture spot freight at the moment it becomes available. The "fixed cost", idle vehicles and the "unpaid", idle drivers are at the ready yet cost the company precious little while sitting and waiting on loads. The "unpaid" drivers are mere pawns that the company hopes will continue to accept the adage that "part of something beats all of nothing".

"Company sponsored driver training schools". I'd like to suggest if large companies are closing them down, such as J.B. Hunt/ Schneider and others, there must be a reason. I honestly don't believe trucking companies really want to be in any business other than transportation. Their original intent was to get newbies on board and train them and then get a long term commitment in order to lesson the turnover. But that idea backfired in their face. I'd be willing to bet so many trucking company owners are wondering what happened to this biz? They've found themselves losing money, turned into a school, being badmouthed in public forums, and not readily admitting they even own a trucking company to casual friends. The bossman over at Arrow trucking has probably slithered off to a foreign country and gotten plastic surgery and a new identity. Would he feel comfortable knowing he has 2000 enemys spread around the country who could recognize him at any given place? :pottytrain3:
