I've been in CDL school full-time (40 hours a week) since December. I know that sounds horrible, and it is. The school is run in such a way that on a good day we get 20 minutes of backing time, and the rest of the day is spent waiting for a turn.

Anyway, they didn't send me to test at the DMV until May. I have failed the test three times since then.

I've also been unemployed since January 2015. I know you won't believe me, but times are tough and I'm down on my luck. I've tried to get a job and tried to turn my life around, but it's so hard and employers are very heartless. If I wasn't trying I wouldn't even have gone to CDL school. It's harder than it looks and most days I feel hopeless, like I'd be better off dead.

Do you think I'll even be able to get a job with a safe trucking company? Or will they all tell me to get lost because of my work history and the fact that I have been in school so long? By "safe," I mean a company that won't fire me for refusing to run illegal or refusing to drive in unsafe weather. I understand that legally they can't do that, but companies always find some excuse.

I want to do OTR, but would also be happy to do local or regional. I'm open to both class A and B.

There are company's that will hire you with a spoty work history, a few mega's will. Don't give up man. Just focus on getting the license first.

Is your heart really into doing this? If so get the negative thoughts and actions out of your head and be positive. Get the "I got this attitude", and get through it. Some company will hire you if you have a CDL.
Some of your statement seems to say you're not 100% into this. If not, don't want to sound cruel, but you will wash out eventually.

Don't worry, plenty of jobs for you once you get that cdl.
Many of us on this forum have been around for awhile, so we'll pitch in and help you find a job.
Put your location on your profile. We need to know the hiring area you live in.

Normally I would not step in, but you seem to be trying. Keep applying on line to as many companies as you can, let them know your ready to run. The thing about running illegal you might have to deal with later, but hope you don't have to do anything wrong. when you drive down any roads , look at the trucks that you go by, write down the name and get on line look them up, and apply. Go in with a POSSITIVE attitude. You can do it.

Try Carolina Logistics; they might take you with that cdl permit.

Am i reading what you wrote correctly,
..You have been in CDL school 40 hours a week since December? Im afraid to ask how much your paying...This is trucking , what could you possibly be doing all this time? You should have had your license by now and had 50,000 miles under your belt..

If you really want go trucking. Go with CRST or Swift, or any of those ####ty companies. Yeah its gonna suck. You will have to do their school and test. Their test is easy. Youll limp around the block, come back get your cdl, and next day you'll meet your trainer. When I was starting out. I couldn't care less what company, jumped on the first train. I am 24 now, honestly I'd rather be doing some else right now, rather than sitting on side of the road and listening to the old ### reefer. But I know when I get home, I can not wait to put those keys back in the ignition.

Yes, try CRST. That long gap in employment is your biggest hurdle.

I would not worry about the mega starter companies trying to run you illegally. They're all on E-logs and have too much to lose to play that game. It's the small ma n pa outfits that like outlaws but they won't hire you without experience anyways. Go to the mega get your year in and move on to a better position.
