Will I need to do the LDT test if my hazmat expired?

It seems that for anyone who obtained their hazmats before the ELDT requirement don’t have to worry about it, but my hazmat expired this past January and I didn’t renew my hazmat due to not having a copy of my birth certificate and the fact I’m not currently using it (now just have normal Class A w/tanker endorsement). Will I now need to do the ELDT training? I’ll have to ask my DMV but I thought I’d ask on here just to be mentally prepared.

It seems that if I held a CDL and the hazmat before Feb 7th 2022, I’m exempt even if I’ve let it lapse since then, but I’m asking to make sure.

If you do have to do ELDT it’s not that big of deal. I did mine a couple months ago to get my hazmat. I paid $70 or so for an online course. It was a 90 minute video and an exam. After you pass the exam it goes into the DMV system saying you’ve completed ELDT. So it’s not that bad of a hoop to jump through if they do make you.

I had to do the ELDT training. Had my Hazmat back in 2009 or so, never needed it, so I dropped it. Last year I decided I wanted it back in case I wanted to switch jobs, and had to go through the ELDT training. As @Long FLD said, wasn't a big deal. I paid like $60, sat in front of my computer for a little while and took an online test. Haven't followed up with the DMV test yet

The lapsing of your HazMat doesn't decide if you need ELDT, unless the lapse triggered your CDL to be downgraded to passenger car license and you waited beyond your state's time-limit for reinstating a CDL.

If your CDL was issued before Feb 7th 2022 you are not required to complete ELDT. I don't know what happens if you let CDL downgrade it to passenger car license long enough that your state requires a new road test before issuing a new CDL. Your past HazMat endorsement doesn't determine current ELDT requirement. Your CDL being issued before or after Feb 7th 2022 determines if you need ELDT when getting or adding CDL, HazMat, Passenger Bus (P) or School Bus (S). For example if you got your CDL in Jan 2022 with no endorsements, you could add HazMat, P, or S without ever taking the ELDT training/test. If you keep your CDL valid for 30 more years and the rules don't change, and you never added the H, P, or S endorsements until then you would still NOT need ELDT.

My opinion isn't important. Google FMCSA+ELDT+Requirements. If you do the first entry is the official answer from FMCSA (the people that regulate trucking)

That’s not true. I’ve had my CDL since May of 1996 and I had to take an ELDT course to add Hazmat a couple months ago.

Thanks for the correction. I guess I don't understand something. I've renewed my Hazmat (held it since '94) since Feb 2022 and didn't have to complete any ELDT. The FMCSA web page is linked below and I quoted the relevant paragraph below that. I wonder if the DMV clerks simply expect every CDL face they see will need ELDT, despite the requirement only being a requirement for some CDL customers. I don't see how the FMCSA words could be more clear in support of how I thought the ELDT requirement operates.

"The ELDT regulations are not retroactive; individuals who were issued a CDL or an S, P, or H endorsement prior to February 7, 2022 are not required to complete training for the respective CDL or endorsement."

Yes, I wasn’t issued a hazmat endorsement prior to Feb 7 2022. So as stated by what you’ve posted twice now, I had to complete an ELDT course. That requirement is also why I said to the OP that if they do make him take it to get his hazmat again it’s not that big of deal, but since he’s had the endorsement before they may not.

Also, it’s not a clerk at the DMV thing. They have nothing to do with it other than verifying you’ve been fingerprinted and completed an ELDT course when you show up to take the written test.

I'm thinking since your HM was earned AFTER Feb 2022 then you qualify for ELDT requirement. My HM earned in '94 hasn't required me to do any ELDT training or testing. Thanks for the correction.

Yeah, I had the same deal as Long FLD. Had Hazmat before (2009 or so) and dropped it. Went to add it last year and had to do the ELDT training. I questioned it, being I had a valid CDL since 2001. I was told I needed it anyway. I don't know if they blew smoke up my butt or not, but I paid the $60 or whatever and did it. Wasn't a big deal.

To add: I hadn't even looked at the rules and regulations last year when I went to add my HM endorsement. I just assumed it was the same as in 09 when I did it then. So I was pretty much in the dark going in last year. I was driving down the road one Saturday morning, saw the DMV was open and, on a whim, decided to stop in and get the ball rolling. It was just an impulse thing. That's when they told me I had to do the training first, before doing the HM endorsement test
