Hows it going everyone. Im hoping all you more experienced folks can help me out. My CDL is in CA. If I ditch this nut job state and move north to Idaho, will my CDL carry over or will Idaho make me test again? Thanks. Drive safe.
Will my CDL carry over if I move to another state?

Nope.
CDL Laws is one license only. You move to another state like I did from Maryland to Arkansas, MD CDL goes bye bye surrender to arkansas. Arkansas provides vision test, gen knowledge written, air brake and the endorsements written provided on my MD CDL. When all that is passed, I am photographed for a Arkansas CDL and swear to Tier one (We did not have Tiers then but it is current now tied to medical DOT card which is now tied to CDL to use it in commerce.) and done. 30 minutes minus fees in cash.
I got grandfathered in after 2009 in our state law. Then we sign a document each time we renew our CDL in one of the 4 tiers. I was Tier two as explained to me, NO Medical card required but am in registry with Uncle Sam to haul dead bodies or do farm work or similar. And the A CDL says I can drive anything except motorcycles.
These days additional CDL requirements include anti trafficing training, Enhanced license status (A gold star is added to your CDL or Car License after 20/20 or before due to real ID laws and so on. Those without that after 2020 will not be able to enter military bases, VA buildings or any federal installation or board domestic flights etc.) and additional information will be required of you.
Moving to another state is not hard. You just surrender your old CDL for the new state's one. You do have to show the new address for residency etc.Seward Thanks this. -
Each state has their own requirements for transferring your CDL, but by law you must do it within (I think) 30 days.
When I switched from CA to MN I only had to take the standard written test, but some states require more than that. And if you want to keep hazmat you will have to go through that test and process and money all over again.
I dropped the HM when I went to MN, so it was only the written test that everyone takes. All the other endorsements carried over.Seward Thanks this. -
I just paid the fees for a new license in UT and that was it. You should ask ID.

Ca. is so anal. Everybody 'should' just accept it and switch over. I can see the other posts. Check...
I can see what Ca. has done to you in your icon picture. I looked like that when I fled Ca.

Hahahaha!! Yup. Ya, iv taken everyone's advice and reached out to Idaho DMV.
Thanksx1Heavy Thanks this. -
And this is why there needs to be a single interstate Federal Motor Carrier license. Individual states do the testing to FMCSA/DOT regulations, but the license is good anywhere in the union. Move to another state and its a simple address change. Kind of silly going through one state's particular testing process when the driver may do 90% of their driving in different states.
