That truck doesn't qualify for a class A, or even a class B.

    Class A =

Any combination vehicle with a combined GVWR of over 26,000 lbs, provided the vehicle being towed weighs more than 10,000 lbs GVWR.

    Class B =

Any vehicle with a GVWR of over 26,000 lbs.

    example:

A dump truck with a GVWR of 56,000 lbs towing a 5,000 lb trailer would be a class B vehicle, because the trailer is less than 10,000 lbs GVWR.

You will have an No air brake restriction on the license and possible if it is an automatic, an automatic restriction - which is stupid.

I think if the truck itself doesn't qualify as a CMV that rule doesnt apply. We dealt with that one a lot when I towed. My truck was an Intl 4900 but GWW wasn't high enough to make it a Class B truck, so we could tow trucks and 3 car trailers legally where if we used the Class B wrecker you needed a Class A for the 3 car.

I agree, if your going to go to the trouble, then do it right.

We were pulled over all the time (DOT target's tow trucks a LOT) and it was never a problem, Maybe every one of us was the luckiest person around then. I can buy a Class B (technically) motorhome but if I'm not for hire
and only tranport my own posessions or family I don't even need a CDL. There's weird loopholes man.

Not my experience, cops don't mess with tow trucks. Not unless your scrap haulers or something.

LOL, we actually did do alot of steel, but I think more of it is the AAA drivers that pickup and drop within a few miles of each stop they make usually dont chain things, dont put thier lights on etc, so thier an easy target. When Boston PD got a CMV enforcement team it really got out of control for a while. Luckily im out of that game. Although Ive considered looking into heavy duty towing since Ive upgrade to A.
