What do the dash marks in-between each setting indicate? What does "max" on the dial turned all the way left do? What's the difference between the defrost setting on the dial and the max defrost button?

The MAX setting just makes the fan blow faster I believe and therefore provides more cooling and more windshield defrosting.

On many vehicles Max A/C is just high fan speed plus Recirculate. Recirculate is when outside air is no longer used and the HVAC just takes the air in the cab and conditions it. Max Defrost also closes the "fresh air" inlet and just dries the air already inside the vehicile. Recirculate should only be used for brief periods. Otherwise it just causes you to sit in stale air while you have the normal stresses of driving.

The difference between "max ac" and "defrost"

max ac is it runs the ac contest in recirculation and dash vents only

Defrost runs the ac intermittently to dry the air and only thru the windshield vents.

The dashes between are 1/2 steps between the pitcher....straight up pic is vent blowing at your face next pic to the right is blowing at the floor.. the dash between is face AND floor

There is face, then a dash mark, then face+ floor. The pictures make sense, but the little tick mark in-between doesn't.

I think I understand the tick marks you are talking about. One position shows vents toward the face. There is a tick and then a position that represents vent to the floor and the face (let's say 50% face / 50% floor), a tick, and position that vents to the floor.

I propose the tick mark between "face and floor" and face is the position where most of the air is vented toward your face and some is vented toward the floor. The tick between "floor and face" and "floor" is where most of the air is vented toward the floor and some toward the face vents.
