Will the new labor rule on 70hrs actually create more or less trucking jobs?

    The article was wrong. The existing regs have allowed 70 hours in 8 days, or 60 hours in 7 days.



    The main effect of these new regs will be more overcrowding in truckstops, pickle parks, and any other place where drivers park. Also, the sequential 1-5AM restriction on the 34 hour reset will mean that lots of drivers will be heading out right after 5AM, resulting in more crowding at shippers and consignees, more traffic congestion on freeways and surface streets, and will also force drivers to take MORE than 34 hours off, depending on what time they start their reset.

    The things I mentioned above will result in drivers running fewer miles (which is the intent of the regulations), thus earning less money while spending more time away from home. The reduction in miles per truck will mean that carriers will have to have more trucks on the road, or switch all trucks to team operation.

    What screwed up the trucking industry in my opinion is our own government trying to stick their nose into something they know nothing about. They messed with the HOS and made ashambles out of it, they deregulated it, now they shove crap like CSA and Eobrs down the drivers throats and the companies just sit back and let them dictate how it should be done. They will never pay drivers a decent wage and will continue to lie and cheat drivers every chance they get. You see the turn over stats and most of it is from broken promises by these so called truck slave labor mills. These companies only care about what we call Seater Heaters or Steering Wheel Holders to fill trucks and god forbid you want to get home or have a family emergency.

    The industry is getting worse in my opinion old Outlaws like myself have parked our trucks due to the facts that were not going to have the government tell us how to run our business. People always say RW its a new breed out there I respond by saying yeah but they are not like I am.

    Cheap wages, home and family time is what 99% of what drivers complain about. And respect is right there as well. The industry needs to revamp its self and look and honestly listen and take action on what drivers need. They need to tell the government stay out of it we did fine before and we will continue to do fine without your help but they won't.

    I would not worry bout jobs because mills like prime, england, swift and so on will continue to turn em out as fast as they quit and continue to lie and steal from the drivers who keep them in business. RW

    Please elaborate on that. 14x5=70, 24x5=120+34=154, 24x7=168-154=14 you can actually work 84 hours a week under the current rules we have. You are forgetting to account for the restart and multiple restarts a week. So if your logging 14 hour days you can work 84 hours a week legally if the planets are in line and the shippers and receivers are open weekends. Just saying that's probably what the arrival was figuring on although they were still 2 hours off. Please feel free to correct my math as I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

    Op, the 1 to 5 period is for drivers wanting a reset. Not everyone does it so not everyone will be effected. Some carriers require a 34 as a matter of policy however carriers are greedy and need iron to roll..... they will quickly figure out what's best for them and shift policy.

    Like RC said some will try a forced team however like a cab over it's a dying breed. Most drivers including myself will not.....my reason being money ( never even close to enough ) so again, drivers or the lack thereof will dictate the outcome of this another boondoggle.

    IMO the sky is not falling tho.......

    Thats what really set me off about that stupid thing! Those idiots were up in arms because of the 'POTENTIAL" of a Driver being able to work that. That doesn't happen in the real world very often. I can't believe they think by limiting a 34 hour period in which you are off duty and resting is a good thing. God this is making me lose what little hair I have left
