Because I have my pride. Anything is better than sitting at home and getting paid for it.

i find some irony in that statement. (absolutely NOTHING against what you say)

i too would rather to have been working, then staying at home, getting paid for it. makes one get lazy and just not wanna get up and go to work, knowing that the money is rolling in for free.

there is just something about being a contributing member of society.

    the ironic thing....?

I AM sitting at home, collecting a retirement check and SS checks.

but i earned those checks, thru all the years of back breaking work.

to me, gooberment handouts lends itself to a "gimme...gimme society"

I started in the industry in the mid 90s and the same megas were crying driver shortage then and never stopped. Their business plan is to grind them out, pay them crap and then screw them until they leave. Finally it gets harder to get new meat so they again cry shortage and want the interstate age lower to 18. Give them a whole new group of suckers.

I dont know if i would necessarily call this a handout. For one it ain't sustainable. Second, it's more like recycled money. Its money the government has gotten from the citizens, is getting, or will get later. Not a thing is free anywhere. Even if America were to fo socialist, hypothetically speaking, everyone still have to contribute except probably way more than now. They gotta get the funds from somewhere, and the money just cycles.

That is a good driver retention problem.

A large amount of drivers are crap drivers who shouldn't be on the road at all.

To the original topic: I am a student currently in training. The classroom size is definitely smaller than normal, I confirmed this with my instructors. We had 9 students in a normal class of 20. 3 are no longer in class, so there are 6 students when there would normally be around 14, assuming the same washout rate. Not only are there fewer students, I waited 3 weeks after completing the classroom portion for the DMV to open so I could get my permit. Then I waited another 2 weeks before the state cleared the school to begin behind the wheel training. Now that I am almost finished with that, try to schedule a road test? You guessed it, 20 days wait minimum with only 14 of 60 DMV office's open. I thought this was an “essential industry” but the state works at their own pace. I have employers lined up waiting for me to take my CDL road test but here I sit collecting unemployment while the state ponders making masks mandatory.
Point being, there is definitely a “new” driver shortage, not necessarily a driver shortage.
