Ok here`s my question, I just got my CDL in January but I would like to hold off getting hired unitl May. I`m not hurting for money right now, $25 an hr working part time doing security, but I`m getting out of that business...getting too old !! and in April I can make approx $8 grand doing a big music festival !!! That money will get me over the training pay hump sufficiently. Sooo, should I start making contact with recruiters now or just wait till just before I can go out on the road ??? and will the time lapse between my getting my CDL and my starting hurt me ??
Will waiting 4 months after getting CDL hurt me ???

Yes, it will hurt you. Look at the big picture, you say you're getting old, so what's the best move for your future if you plan to have any decent, quality retired life someday. Right now, you're living for the moment; like putting the moves on the hottie next door knowing you will suffer with alimony the rest of your life.

i agree with chinatown, i tell students at schools that i talk to not to wait more then a week or so, mainly becuause every day you are not driving your skills diminish and you risk the chance of being sent home for flunking a road test or training. by your comments if you told me that as a recruiter i would not even consider you at anytime cause i am thinking you are not commited to the field and you would be one of the job hoppers, good luck.

In 4 months, the starter companies will be at the point of expecting you to go through driving school again. Get busy and find a job now.

As long as you have that CDL you can get all the work you want. You'll never make 25 an hr though

Driving a truck is a repetitive type action the more you do it the better you become, waiting for such a long period you tend to forget, especially starting out as a new driver, just my 2 cents

May hurt you on road test as well. 25 dollars doing security. Can I be your replacement

Ironpony is right, it'll be a problem with starter companies. Most of them have either a 30, 60 or 90 days out school rule after which they will not accept you without a refresher.
