Hey guys, I've been considering a trucking career for a while now but not really sure which would be the best option to move forward with it.
I was originally considering signing on for one of the bigger companies that provide training but honestly I don't want to live in a hotel halfway across the country for a month or more just for training.
There are 2 training schools in my town, Smith and Solomon and Winsors. Did some research on this forum, and most of it lead me to believe Winsors is the better option, but most of those posts were from years ago and I'm not sure if anything has changed since then. I've been past S&S a few times and I did notice a fairly large amount of people standing around while someone was backing up, etc. which leads me to believe they're probably a terrible option to consider if you actually want to learn how to drive(too many students, too little time)
Anyway, is there anyone that can help me out? Or maybe offer some other suggestions. Long term, I would like to find a local job, but I'm currently single and don't mind doing some OTR, maybe even prefer it, to start out.

I went to Smith Solomon in Linden,NJ and got my CDL-A in September. I can only tell you that out of a 4 hour night class I probably drove and practiced about an hour, the rest of the time was standing around watching the other 30 guys in your class take their turn. I would definitely look for something that gives you more personal attention and road time. Good luck, I hope this helps.

GO to S&S ... I graduated that campus recently. Worth every penny.
Their hours are flexible. Yes, there is some wait for yard skills ... I won't deny that. BUT if you are motivated AND you are a GOOD listener, you will get all you need out of your training; instructors like people who don't have an attitude and can listen. If you fail your road test, they will help you until you do, without extra charge.
You will get great road time, and the road equipment is current ... AND representative of what you will drive when you go OTR. That would be sleeper cabs and 48' dry box trailers.
Please don't kid yourself into thinking that you WILL get a kick-butt local gig driving a rig right after you graduate. It's certainly not impossible; I did it - but I had to start on a non-CDL vehicle in a specialty market. The odds for getting a job driving a big rig just out of school are much higher on the OTR side.
Also, you will find it a lot easier getting hired - no matter WHAT company you go to (local or OTR) - if you have graduated from a reputable school, which S&S is.
Now, just so you know, many great local/regional companies in NJ only require a year of OTR. So if you can do OTR at all? Do it for the year.Last edited: Mar 26, 2013
