    Am I dreaming?

I'm 49, been out of steady work for over 10 yrs with serious chronic migraines. Tried getting steady work but pain killers (Flexarol)(Tramadol)(only as needed) has been liability issue...understood. Doc is a bean counter, glad, my consumption is very low.
Done off and on driving largest 26ft cargo trucks that don't need CDL. Driving history, whole life, impeccable, credit impeccable. Driven loaded 26ft cargo trucks through mountains in freezing rain, snow storms, highways, cities, etc., No problem. Very causious, alert, defensive driver. If I am in so much pain or condition that I couldn't feel comfortable driving, I didn't. Owner will vouch for my driving his trucks.
Always wanted to go OTR, drive big rigs. Love the open road, can pull my own, just those #### killer migraines.
Would get my CDL permit b4 going to school, would like to add hazmat, tanker, air brake endorsements.
Wouldn't want to O/O, too much at my age, rather just get in with a good company, be a company driver where I could make a decent living driving hazmat, not worry about all the O/O extras. Will drive anywhere anytime in any weather...as long as road's not closed.

1- Being out of serious work for so long, how is that going to affect my getting into driving school?
2- ...getting work with companies after school?

    Am I dreaming?

Wht may be a problem is with these headaches you'll be stopping too much and be late for appointments. When you drove for that owner and stopped, how long did you stay stopped. Many loads in trucking is time sensitive and you cant have too many late loads either picking up or delivery. Are you willing to drive anywhere from 300 to 600 miles day?How about being gone for at least a month, would that bother you? What if these headaches require immediate attention. All these issues and then some you need to think about before making any kind of committment to trucking. If you do go to school, find a company thatll will pre hire you first so then youll have a possible job after you graduate.

Full time OTR trucking is not as easy as many people think it is, and can cause migraines on its own. Even if a company hires you, they aren't gonna want their loads delayed every time you are fighting a migraine. I wouldn't exactly say you are dreaming....but I do think you need a different plan. Good luck.

I have never stopped except for fuel. Most driven is 18 hours with full migraine. I don't stop when driving except to fuel and bthrm break, which I cover during fuel stop. I have driven quite often on meds, but never any problem. I don't delay anything in anyway due to my migraines. Just life. I deal with it, take a pill if I need to. But I do get them, do take meds, have excellent driving record, etc.
Pull my own, just migraines and meds...no interference with anything...in my view...but driving school, work history, companies?????
Given that and my first post, do you think I'm dreaming?

Bottom line: If your scripts preclude you from driving it's not going to happen. A doc will have to sign off that none of your scripts will impair your ability to drive. If they can't sign off you can't have it on the truck.

I get occasional migraines (1-2 a year) and I can say if yours are anything like mine you wont be driving off meds with them. I just got one yesterday (second one in the past year) and I was fortunate enough to be able to shut down for the day and sleep. There's no way I could've gone 50 more miles. If I got them frequently there's no way I could be doing this.

I don't think any company will take you because of the meds you're on. They will see it as opening themselves up for a major lawsuit if you were to get in an accident and you were taking them at the time.

Well if you can handle the everyday stress of driving and your dispatchers or the company then I say go for it if this is what you truely wanna do.But you wanna make sure your company is fully aware of your headaches as well as all the medication your on and no I don't feel you're dreaming because maybe soon your dream will become reality. How is your work history?Companies will want to know everyplace you have worked for 3 yrs and if you have any gaps during those 3 yrs, they're going to want you to fill in the gaps otherwise they'll disqualify you.

Getting into driving school? No problem.
Getting a job after driving school. Problem

Other posters have answered the migraine situation. But the 10 year gap in employment is going to be a problem. First, they want to make sure you have not been somewhere like a Turkish prison for some of that time (somewhat joking). As a company, they will look at your unemployment because of a medical problem with concern. You have said that you can drive with the migraines, yet you have been basically unemployed. Not judging, but if I was them, I would have it in the back of my mind that you are seeking employment for just long enough to shoot for some kind of workers comp or disability.
I would try and find some kind of local employment doing anything first so that I could get a recent job history going again. Then shoot for for the CDL and big truck.
    Good luck

The longer I frequent this forum the more I'm beginning to question the validity of a lot of these new threads.

    Probably just me though...

If you can pass the DOT physical, concerning the medications, there are several OTR companies that will hire you, even with the rough work history. Best thing to do is find some alternative medications that the DOT doctors will approve.
