The head driving instructor at the driving school I went to in 1981 said to carry a shotgun because it was considered a defensive weapon. I thought it was kinda funny because you can be pretty offensive with a 12-gauge!
I haven't read every post in the thread, has anybody bought up the idea of blackpowder weapons? Not sure about current laws, but years ago they were considered "primitive weapons" and were exempt from most federal firearms laws. I knew a guy who kept 2 or 3 in his pick-up because they were not considered to be "concealed weapons".

I just carry a thumper and a hunting knife. I know guys that carry pelot pistols and the like, one guy carries a cross bow, LOL. DOT says we can't carry firearms, but thats about it. For me the three most dangerous cities are Dallas, Houston and Atlanta I'm real careful in those areas as thats where I have encountered problems in the past.

Drop a net from your window. That should give you enough time to sick your dog on 'em.
Might as well tase them after the dog tears 'em up just to teach them a lesson. And a kick or two to the face will remind them again ! All kidding aside it's obviously always best to try to avoid a situation.

After reading all the posts here I got curious about the firearms issue and federal law, I couldn't find any such law that says we can't carry in a truck the way we do our POV's. However state and local laws do apply. The reasoned I thought it was illegal is that in every orientation I have been in, every company has told me it was against Federal Law. So, I apologize for me listening to the companies and thinking they were telling me the truth. LOL. I don't know why I would have thought that to begin with. LOL.

a buddy of mine was cornered on his pre trip by 3 guys, for that reason i carry a 1911 .45 with hallows, because shooting twice is just silly? I would rather be judged by 12 than be carried by 6, i carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy, when seconds count the cops are just minutes away, when being attacked firearms are more useful than a camera. and last but surely not least one for the ladies, the theory that a woman found dead raped and strangled with her own pantyhose is morally superior than her explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

In August 2010 , 2 guys followed a truck from NYC, waited till the driver got to OH and showered ,
then stole the entire truck/trailer filled w/ laptop computers..

The driver came out and his truck wasn't there, obviously and inside job somewhere....

So can you legally carry a weapon in a CMV?
    How about a shotgun?
