Been out of the industry a long time, my last year was 2003. I live in southern CA. I have been calling many trucking companies in the area within a 100 miles. Most of the companies I would speak with would not consider me if I did not live within 30 miles of the terminal. Some would say the reason for this is to cut down on deadhead miles an to stop drivers like myself from taking the trucks home. So I'm asking if this is going on nationwide, or just in California. Do all newbies in the US need to live within 30 or so miles of the terminal to get hired on. Thanks for any info.:biggrin_2558:

It depends on the company. Every company has their "rules". I would suggest you tell them you will leave the truck at the terminal when on home time and drive you POV back and forth or get a ride from Wifey.

some companies, (Roehl for instance) goes by zip codes to determine what type of trucking they have for your area. for instance, in my area, they offer reefer, van and now flatbed...

however, just one zip code south of me, and its vans and reefers only.....2 zip codes away, its vans only.......

now frankly from what i have seen here on the east coast is that it doesn't matter how far away you live, well mostly because no big carriers are out here...!!!

so the residency requirements may be for a select few areas of the country, but hey, if they were to say YOU DO NOT take the truck home, then you don't.....they should be able to allow you to park your personal vehicle on their property, then you just commute. heck over here, some guys live in mass and commute to new hampshire for thier jobs....about 50 miles one way i was told. so IT CAN BE DONE.....
