  4. So the answer to your question is yes I paid off a truck. But I sold it because I didn't put away money like I should have. Just having a maintenance escrow isn't enough. Not going to lie, I did it wrong. Flat out, no excuses, I didn't have 30k or higher in the bank to cover an overhaul. Lesson learned. I will on the next one. And thanks for explaining the fsc dilemna. I average anywhere from 7.8 to 8.5 mpg with my 2014 Evolution and I'm struggling to make what I used to. I am a driver who works to live though and not the other way around. I come out for 5-6 weeks and take 10-14 days off. I know, a lot of people are going to say, "no way, you can't make no money that way." Believe me or not. I have two little girls at home, 7 and 3 and they still love their daddy. :) I just believe that if you really want something bad enough, you will make it happen. So for me, hometime is up near the top of my priority list and a and a understood that. Jct understood it as well. But with lack of freight picking up or delivering where I live (near Boise) I often found myself swallowing crazy amounts of deadhead everytime I went home to see my girls. There are so many variables besides pay and hometime however. I think any driver with a half a brain can understand that. There are thing, intangibles, that have value that aren't reflected in your pay. That's what is toughest about leaving jct. But I've decided that moving to a company that is smaller (more family oriented), a company that also offers a walk away lease, a company that pays 74%if gross revenue, a company that gives their L/P drivers 100% of the surcharge and 100% of fuel rebates. How do I not give them a go? I've been involved in trucking since May of 2006. I started at Swift and stayed until April of 2009 which is when I started at JCT. 9 years, 2 companies. I don't think I'm the norm. That being said, I feel like I can be successful in whatever situation I am in. Time to hit the road.

f.s.c. works well for me. I do remember when there were no such thing as a f.s.c. at least when I started trucking, I did not hear of it. my fuel discount is even better. last year it was up to .99 a gal lower than cash price at the pumps. some of the obstacles are not rates & fuel, it's the cost of everything that has risen quite a bit, tires parts, and other things we need.

Just be prepared, being gone that long. My husband has been driving since our youngest was born. She will be 11 in October. The first time he came off the road for a local job was because our middle daughter (7 at the time) said she hated daddy because he was never home. He was on a dedicated account then and home every weekend, but switched to a local job for a few years. He's been back OTR for the past year and a half and gone 5-7 weeks at his current job.

Our oldest, now 14, made the comment on a school project that she only lives with me because her dad doesn't really live here anymore. It's really hard. He's going to do a lease purchase, too, but he only plans to stay out two weeks at a time so that we can see him more. It'll be tough at times, financially, and sacrifices will need to be made, but we will make it work and money isn't everything...

We plan to open a separate business checking account for the truck. We have 2 savings and will set up one to put 25% in for taxes, and another for household savings. The truck account will be for emergencies/maintenance for the truck that aren't covered by the maintenance account.

Anything can happen, but we are trying to be as prepared as we can right now. Only time will tell if we will be a success story or not, but at least we can just walk away if it doesn't work and we won't have a bank trying to take away our house because we can't make the truck payments!

  8. I understand
I cut all my costs down while out here on the road to right at $45 dollars a week. I quit smoking, drinking while I'm home, eating out, spending money on anything other than what I absolutely need. It's tough. I love my kids, I do my best. They know that.

When your net income is based on your FSC something is wrong,FSC goes up and down on each load,Suppose you had NO FSC,could you be profitable ??

  10. Nope. 90 cents a mile with a truck payment.

  11. Also, we get a FSC based on the national average. So this week is $0.21 cpm. I'm making $1.11 on all miles this week.
