I assume you only ever attach to the 5400 lb stake pocket and never the 4000 lb stake pocket.
spyder7723 Thanks this. -
Thing is, I'm not sure how to tell the difference seeing as neither one is actually marked on the pockets
-
Yeah, that was kind of the point. I've seen plaques like that before and just shake my head.
-
everyone of my stake pockets are welded just like these

It has nothing to do with the pockets, the different rating is for how you hook the chain.
A 4k rating for a pocket on an aluminum is typically when you use the hook to grab the pocket. 5400 would be if you wrapped the chain all the way around the pocket and hooked back to the chain.
If the trailer doesn't have a plaque with a diagram showing what the ratings are for, the owners manual should.AUfan78 Thanks this. -
Have any supporting theories to back that?JimmyWells Thanks this.

Scroll down to page 32 on this Fontaine Manual.
fargonaz and JimmyWells Thank this. -
That would be great, if I was pulling a Fontaine trailer
-
Some good information there, thanks. I was recently reading somewhere that hooking to the stake pocket wasn't as safe as wrapping the chain entirely around it due to the pressure point being mostly on the hook itself. It seems, according to Fontaine, that isn't true since they give either scenario a WLL rating of 5,400 pounds.
