I am new to truck driving and I was wondering if you have to provide W2's for employment verification after you apply? Or do they just call my past employers? If it's the latter I have nothing to worry about, just moved a lot over the years and have probably lost quite a few.

For what it's worth in 14 years of applying for jobs I've never had anyone ask for them

A lot of past employers don't reply to employment verification requests, I recall one time sending a w2 to inquiring future employer. Being new You'll just need the past 3 years, If you've worked in trucking/driving before then will need the past 10 years

They will rely mostly on responses to prior employment inquiries. They're not only looking for proof you worked for said companies and what periods, but they also want to know if there were any work history details they may find relevant, especially if related to a driving job. They're also looking for employment gaps which can potentially be a past job where a serious matter occurred, and the prospective employee may be trying to hide.

We used to. I don't think it matters now.

There are a number of ways information can be gained on you.

I never ask for w2s, to me that's too personal.

We call and also do a complete background check on the applicant that takes a week to get back, everything is in it, from court appearances to credit reports.

    x1Heavy Thanks this.

I'm new to the trucking industry and looking at prospective employers. Of the companies I've looked at, at least a dozen so far, I've never seen anywhere in the "qualifications" or "requirements" section any mention of anything to do with civil court appearances or credit reports. What I have seen pertains to criminal history, driving record, employment history etc. So naturally now I'm curious, why would that not be mentioned anywhere on these recruiting sites, if that is indeed part of the hiring process? Seems kinda shady to me. Oh and I'm also curious now what company do you weed people out for? I've got a handful of companies picked out that I'm interested in. I want to make sure that if your company is on my short list, I cross it off. I have a top secret security clearance and I'm not interested in working for any company that outright lies to potential employees even before they start working there.

I once applied to a company that wanted ppl. To get the work history from the dept of labor. Well they told me no since I had no work history with the dept of labor In my home state. I replied that I had drove for 8 yrs and have never drove for a company that was based out of that state. And can prove it. They still said no that. The only go by labor dept reports.

So as for the W2 most OTR companies don't go by those. Only what you list. And they will compare that against what DAC/USIS/Hire right reports say. But every once in a while some place goes about it differently tha the others. I heard USX would send ppl home in the past if it was stated on app that they were self employed and couldn't provide tax statements to support it.

Follow the directions on the application. Pay particular attention to what is being asked for. Because you are a new driver and should not have any CDL driving history more then likely you will be asked for anywhere from 3 to 10 years employment history. There is no right or wrong answer to this question, however in all my years I have never heard of a trucking company asking for W2s in this way. Once you file the application the company will contact you or send you an email telling you what you need to provide. Otherwise relax.
