I've been self-employed for the past 10 years. How will companies look at this. Will this be a deal breaker in my being hired?

I was self employed for 16, an affidavid and tax returns and I was good to go.
-
crete needed schedual c's from my tax returns. And a notorized letter from someone other then family stating that i owned a busness.
-
This is crazy. I just left the electronic security industry, designing access control, alarms and cameras for banks, US Government, State Government, military bases, even some CIA work. And none of em did this crap or required notarized letters.
All they required was Background check and fingerprints. You mean I can design and install vaults and and have access to bank alarm codes but not drive a truck without a notarized letter to prove that I owned a company?
WTF is up with that? -
These companies just follow the the FMCSA 's employment history standards, they need all of the employment verification in their files for each and every employee hired as a driver......if not,.... they suffer penalties and this can affect their insurance ratings for non-compliance. Homeland Security changed so much in the transportation industry after 911.

Not trying to be a jailhouse lawyer, but the sections of the law you posted concerned if you were previously employed as a commercial driver. My self employment had nothing to do with driving.

There is some more detail in the law that states if you have ever been a commercial driver, they require 10 years history, if a new driver they need 3 years verified of non driving employment, and it must be verfified in writing from the previous employer or if self employed they need tax records and business licence if required by that type of business, if the business does not require a licence, they typically want a notorized letter from someone other then family stating that you owned a busness Trust me, these companies do not make this up, they are just doing what the law requires. All this extra verification and data management costs these companies a ton of money and they would not do it, if not required.

I understand this part of the law will become even tougher to meet for self employed in Jan of 2013, if the employment is not driving related. With driver related employment, even if self employed there are so many things that they can track your past employment due to all the current regulations, so all the detail is not needed.
The truely sad thing is that many of these companies that hire student drivers, invite them to orientation and then can not hire them due to lack of verification, instead of doing this when the application is submitted. I see so many posts all over the net about students who think they are all set for over the road training and then never make it through the orientation process or jerk them off the truck during training, as they do have 30 days to verify.Last edited: Dec 24, 2011

Companies I've talked to have only wanted my schedule C's. I think there was one that wanted a notarized letter as well.

I was self employed and all I needed was my tax returns form the last 3 years. They also may ask for proof like a copy of your business licence and tax ID forum/number.

I had to supply 5yrs of tax returns, no issues...
