I'm Planning On Applying At A Truck Driving School This Month And I Was Wondering What Could I Do About My Work History Problem. My Father Was Diagnosed With Cancer In 2003 And My Mother Has Had Severe Bronchitis And Asthma And Has Been On A Oxigen For The Last 15 Years, Both Unable To Take Care Of Themselves. Since My Father Was Diagnosed, I Have Been Taking Care Of Them For The Past 3 And A Half Years, "driving Them To The Doctors, Shopping, Cooking And Cleaning, Etc, Etc", Pretty Much A Full Time Job With No Pay. My Father Passed Away This Year In May And Now My Sister Takes Care Of My Mother. So I Have No Work History For Them Years And Before That, I Worked Part Time Under The Table For My Fathers Business For The Last 10 Years Before That. It Was A Seasonable Job And Most Of The Time, The Jobs Where Few And Far In Between. It Was A Real Struggle To Survive And My Father Couldnt Do It Anymore Because Of His Health. I'm Not Lazy And I Tried To Be A Good Son, And I Just Thought It Was The Right Thing To Do. But Now I Am Concerned Because I've Seen On Here That A Persons Job History Is A Big Deal. So What Should I Do? I Really Want To Drive A Truck Bad, But Is This Something That Is Going To Mess Me Up. I Basically Have No Work History That Is Verifiable And I Am Now In Desperate Need For Advice.

My husband and I are owner operators, but when I recently decided to get back into the truck and drive, I had to do a job application for our records as well as for the company we are leased on with. Well, everything had to be verified by them and they had to accept me as a driver even though we own the truck. THey wanted 10 years.
I was not sure just how they would feel about the fact that for the last 4 years I was just being a full time Mom, and the 2 years prior to that I had an office job. On the application I had to fill out that I was a homemaker, and they also wanted to know how I was making it. ( Personally I think thats none of their business ) but I had to actually write on there that I "made" it because my husband was the sole provider for the family. They also said that it was possible that they would ask for letters from people who could verify that, they didnt. It was a real pain, but I did get through that and got to work.
I would try to get pre hired with a company before going to school just to be sure that you can get in somewhere that you would want to work. I am sure there is someone out there who will understand, you just have to take the time to find them. As far as the unverifiable work before taking care of your parents, thats going to be a hard one. I would think that basically since its unverifiable, it would possibly need to be explained as unemployed. Good luck, if you really want this take the time to search out the right company for you. And it wouldent be a bad idea to check out that pilot car company as suggested, you never know where that could lead. It would be verifiable work, as well as networking with drivers and companies who could potentially help you get in as a truck driver.
