Hello, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Patrick and I work with a trucking company in western Michigan that is in the Intermodal Drayage side of transportation. I have many years in the trucking industry with a strong background in Safety and Operations, as well as many years in I/T (I am not here trying to hire drivers or promote our company). What I am looking to do is share information related to Drayage transportation and perhaps get a feel for what issues the drivers are experiencing from other companies at rail yards, etc. Also, I would love to share information related to the operations side of the business with other like-minded professionals related to the software you utilize for dispatch, logging, etc.
Thanks
-Patrick

I did intermodal as a companying driver for JB Hunt out of Chicago from 4/08 to 10/11. I had an old COE that was sitting and thought about putting it back on the road pulling containers but I didn't like the equipment that I saw being pulled from the rail yard. The biggest issue with the containers were the doors. Almost always held up at outgate inspection as a driver tried to open or close the doors. Chassis with bad tires or missing lights or dolly handles. Not sure what drayage pays but the aggravation didn't seem worth it. I heard overweight could also be a problem.

A local container yard contacted me to see if I would be interested in picking up empty cans. They said, they would give me a printed list of trailers/cans at local warehouse locations. I would have 24 hour access to trailers and yard. I went in and talked with them, I would use my truck, plates, insurance and pay my fuel tax. They wanted $1900 escro. Said was for tires and lights. I left not paying for repair in their equipment. I think we need to look into business practices of container companies as most want to nickel and dime the contractor.
