Just some news for you guys, no one is ever ready for a mandate.
You guys are assuming that cops can't operate the equipment, they can and they can read the ELD easier than the log.
Worked the other side of the fence today

My point is that every state has different "acceptable" means of data transfer. Some (for security reasons) will NOT permit officers to insert a USB device into any state-owned computer that has been in another device. Others won't permit bluetooth synching. If the state ONLY allows e-mailed logs, then anyone with a "local transfer" type device (fully legal under the regs) will not be able to send the logs to the officer. There are 4 legal means of data transfer...2 for "telematic" devices, and 2 for "local" devices. Unless your device can do all 4, you're likely to run into a situation somewhere where you cannot transfer your logs to the officer wishing to comb over them...meaning the ONLY way they can view your logs is on the device itself. So what happens if they find a problem? With paper, they'd take the original as "evidence", and you'd have to re-draw based upon your carbon copies. How will they "keep" a copy of an electronic document their state law doesn't allow for them to transfer into their custody? They sure as hell aren't keeping my device (which is another reason NOT to rely upon your primary phone to synch with the ELD, just in case they try). Not only is it an expensive tool, but because all data is stored locally ON my device, it pretty much means I would leave there with no ELD and no record of my previous days. So how is this situation resolved? Things like this come about because the mandate was pushed through too quickly, with too little time or effort put into the details. Electronic logs looks good on paper, but in the real world they just don't work.

That's why I went with the Stone Age vdo unit.
At the press of a button in spits out a tradional looking paper log to hand to the officer.bowhunter67 Thanks this. -

Are you useing the truck fueling button for your ifta reporting?
If not you can denote that you fueled on the regular log notes.
Also is yours an eld or an aobrd? -
Eld I think I should go back in and see how it's set up the only problem is there isn't a lot of info on setup for these.

I think if you go on line and Google the instructions you can download them and print them.bowhunter67 Thanks this. -
I was leaning toward the VDO system until I heard the back office keeps your data in the cloud (where you have no direct control over it)...and that the rolls of paper are only good for about 2 inspections before you've got to replace the roll. If you can't find a cheaper source of the thermal paper, that could get expensive...that and my truck has no AC, so things can get rather warm in the summer. Will it be hot enough to trash the thermal paper? Didn't want to risk it.

I have argued that the rule was to have six months previous logs on file at your place of business so why would all these eld makers make there storage off side on some server somewhere in cyber space?
I'm quite sure I know the answer to my own question.bowhunter67 Thanks this. -
