This happened to one of my neighbors several years ago -- a truck tire he was working on in the barn separated and exploded, crushing parts of his skull and doing some nasty stuff to his body. It was touch-and-go for a while, but he survived... however suffers some permanent disabilities from the accident.
And it was something he'd done successfully many, many times before... -
I'm assuming that this was a split rim. In my younger years, I worked on big trucks, and those things were the standard. I hated them. I had one blow apart on me, sending that ring through the ceiling of the shop. There were no such things as cages back then too.
I never trusted those rings to seat....never. I was far away from them until that tire was full of air and I knew for sure that it was seated.
Something tells me that these two guys were not using the approved method for inflating those things.
That's not a good way to go....and a tragedy for sure. -
I have never worked on them, but I have driven two OLD trucks with them on the steers, and they both wobbled while going down the road.
