Well, after only 3 days with this guy and 39 hours later, i am calling it quits. The guy i started to work for is a SHYSTER. He goes around his log book by not filling out each individual stop and does not mark his time on-duty when at his destination but instead calls it IN-THEORY the way he fills his books out in order to save him more hours for when needed.
Every time i passed those MTO (ONTARIO) scales, i would get nervous because i know my log books are not within regulation.
As a new driver with a clean CVOR and no record on my personal vehicle either, i am calling it quits as this is not how i want to start off into this indusrty.
What exactly would you guys do in this situation?
I was told by this guy that i would be working from 5:00am-3:30pm and infact would go out in the morning at 4:30am to do my circle check and prepare my paper work and than be gone at 5:00am but would not be home until 7:00pm.
I confronted him today and he said if you want to do your log books by the regulations, don't cry to him after my 5 days i am out of hours.
What would you guys say to that?
He is a JIT (Just In Time) supplier but i feel that this could really impact my future as a professional driver if i get caught with my log books out of regulation.
I have a growing concern because this is my first opportunity as a driver and i am getting this BS.
Thanks in advance and any help or advice would be appreciated.
Working for the SHYSTER!!!!!

ok im not really qualified to awnser this question b/c im new also. but however rules are the rules and they are made to be followed. i would not even think of playing games with my log book. if you keep it legal you will have nothing to worry about. just think of it this way you wouldnt want to pay dot to drive so keep it legal. as for this guy you are talking about just tell him you do it your way (which is wrong) and ill do it my way (which is right) dont let some idiot jeapordize all that you have worked for for. id also request a new trainer and let the company know what is going on. hope this helps and good luck to you.

It sounds like what he's wanting you to do is log only 15 min for your pre-trip inspection even though it may take 45 min, and not start a line until you are ready to leave. Those are a couple of the standard shortcuts people take, and they won't get you in any trouble unless you are paid by the hour, in which case you must have all of your paid time on the book.

. I've been doing 14hr days all week and have been completely legal. I just watch my 14hr rule and my 10hrs off duty time. The only thing out of the ordinary I had to do was deffer my off-duty time one day (which is legal). At the end of the week I still had hrs left for my 70, but I don't work weekends so that's no problem as I will be reset by Monday.

Mack the only statement you made I don't agree with is fudging of course, but I know you guys do that and well I can say maybe you are a little right there. DO be carefull of who may be watching you!
Also being paid for something does not mean you have to log it on line 4 (this may help you). I can pay a driver to sleep for 10 hours if I want. Detention time, well you could be spending that time in the sleeper. The point is the customer screwed up so the customer has to pay for making you sleep earlier than plannnedDOT does not "ALWAYS" look at pay versus logs. It does count in some cases. Tricky, but the main thing is log what you are actually doing and that will answer your question as how to log it.
I hope this all made sense, I AM VERY TIRED AND WORN OUT TONIGHT -
OOOpss I think you meant to tell him 11 hours of driving before the 14 th hour. Your rule is 13 hours, USA is 11. Or is he from Canada and I don't know? That could be possible. We can't defer in the USA either. Which I am still confused on how that works there??? I think if you take a 2 hour break that is excluded from the 14 hour, is that right?
I love the Canadians 10 hour break, 8 hour break and an increment of 4) 30 minute breaks or you can do it in like 2) 1 hour breaks. I think I said that right? -
My advise is to not work for a JIT company right off the bat starting out. Many are prone to pressuring drivers to run illegal since some pay big fines if they don't meet on time requirments
You might have to shop around alot to find a company that will not mind you following the books like they taught you in school. The reality of trucking is that people who bend the rules usually get more and better loads becuase they get the loads the company won't give to a driver who always has to look at their log book first.
Some companies will even test a new driver just to see what they are willing to do and start marking the boxes on your driver profile sheet everytime you mention the word I can't. Don't believe me? My Girlfriend was a dispatcher for 3 different medium to large carriers out here in the west. Her screen had two lists. The yes boss I'm on my way list, and the I can't list. Guess which one did not grow cobwebs sitting at the truck stop? Good luck -
Also I believe we are only able to defer hrs once a week, but I'm not sure on that part. Oh and also any off duty time you take during your day/shift (ie. lunch) does extend your 14hr clock, but not the 16hr so if you go on duty at 5am and take an hr off during the day then your 14hr will not be up untill 8pm. but that is when you now have to watch you off duty requirements, depending on when you need to start your next day. -
Heres how I feel. 1st I agree that the standard is 15 min for inspection. Also, I never logged anything over 15 min./ stop and since 1968 never had anyone question that fact. How bad do you want to work? How much are u getting paid. Put in a year and then get out. The guy is giving you an oportunity to prove yourself. I dont know him, is he honest and does he have good equipment, good tires, wash it often ? The gras is always greener! Karl

Hey so you know the USA Regs & Candian Regs?
I am curious to know if a driver in the US split breaks for say 3-4 days could he/she violate the new Canadian Rules? I have not layed it out like I should have by now (slacking, thanks to addiction to the computer)
If you don't know that's cool. My thought is no you can not violate it.
I do understand the 14 hour rule and your 10 hour breaks. I did not study the split breaking that well, I will eventually I know
HAVE A TERRIFIC NIGHT AND A SAFE ONE AT THAT
