In Alaska, you are somewhat limited as far as companies to haul for. no brokers to deal with unless it is coming in or going out, which I do not do anymore, and doubt I ever will.
Even at that I could count the number of brokers on one hand I bet. lol

Comp will be a percentage of payroll and every state is different.

In NY you can buy workmans comp on yourself. I'm paying roughly $5800/yr based on my last payroll audit which figured around $45k give take.

Can't you pay your self a set salary, say 30,000 with prudem or some other way, instead of all of it under payroll?

That's what I do, but when the state audited my work comp policy, they gave me all my premiums back. Wouldn't cover the owner, even in an LLC on salary.

For our line of work, it's 4% of gross. These guys paying 12% or more...... holy heck, that would sting!

Don't come to Alaska, if I am thinking right, it is 26% here. I know we are the highest in the country.
When the guy that had the salcha sawmill closed it,he told me it was because he could no longer afford the comp. 55% for the mill hands, 76% for his logging crew. True or not I do not know but one of the loggers I haul for told me it was cheaper to buy feller bunchers and proccessors at 1/2 mil a pop than it was to pay comp hiring hands to log with chainsaws.

Yes, if your set up as a corp you can. In NY they go by trade and have a bare minimum you can show. I think a truck drivers is something like $35k/yr

Your numbers for the loggers are pretty close. My brother is a faller, mosty retired now, and he ran his own logging business for many years. He said the wc for fallers just isn't affordable anymore.
A lot of the companies have gone fully mechanized. They've just about done away with anybody working on the ground. Choker setters and landing rats are almost a thing of the past.
