I've stayed local for the last 7 years or so, but recently started taking one or two otr trips a month, in a day cab, to either over by Wheeling WV or Baton Rouge La. Have never felt this way in the past, but it seems I'm terrified of other truck "drivers" and can't get the thought out of my mind that at any instance a truck is gonna fly across the median and land on my head or when traffic slows on the freeway there is gonna be a driver that's hasn't slept in three days slam into the back of me and kill me. You guys can laugh at me if you want, but man I don't think I can do it much longer. Maybe I just get too worked up, idk
Worried about death from another "driver"?

I'm doing corn right now, and some of the operations drivers ( I'm sub contracted) are down right dangerous. When I come off the field at 100k and they aren't paying attention its scary.
When I run out of state I sometimes worry. I'm more worried about crushing a 4 Wheeler that's oblivious to its surroundings though.
I've always had the mentality though, when your numbers up its time to punch out. Nothing to be upset about.Straight Stacks, 8thnote, MrEd and 1 other person Thank this. -
You feel like this all the time or just when going on the long trips? Maybe you're just out of your comfort zone doing overnight runs. If so, stay local. You might also just need to take a break. I know I felt like that last winter. Roads in the northeast suck!

Dump that local job!

I'd worry more about the All You Can Eat Buffetts at the TA killing you before another driver does but I understand the feeling. Lack of talent in this industry is becoming all too familiar.

Fear is not a bad thing if properly managed. It can save your life.Karenk, sshewins and NavigatorWife Thank this. -
Anticipation of Death is worse than Death itself.
Most drivers that I've seen killed on the bigroad got themselves killed because they cut their wheel trying to avoid hitting someone who shouldn't be on the road. F someone crosses the median, and your choice is either hit them or go into the ditch, you hit them. The odds of your survival will be greater, much greater, by holding your lane and swapping paint.
But if your heart bleeds, and if you 'oh just couldn't live with yourself if you took another's life', and you to cut your wheel, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS.
Cop: What happened?
Bleeder: This minivan crossed the median, and I swerved to avoid it and lost control...
Cop: What minivan?
Bleeder: Well, it kept going.
Cop: Did the minivan make contact with your truck?
Bleeder: No, I swerved to avoid them.
Cop:.......
Cops too are under pressure to be PC. My Sargent used to stay in trouble because he had no problem telling the general public that they were stupid. So, instead of telling you that you're stupid and a danger to everyone around you, they go silent. And instantly Stupid begins to think, "that cop was so nice! He didn't judge me. He didn't say I was at fault or anything." Thus Stupid believes that everything is okay until the insurance people, the lawyers, and the very first first person besides your parent since you reached adulthood to inform you that your name means "Stupid", the court Judge, gets a hold of you.
It's actually fun to see someone's face when they realize for the first time in life that they themselves are Stupid, "I don't believe it...I'm Stupid. Hey Fred, I am Stupid, aren't I? Mom, why didn't you ever tell me the truth? You lied to me, you always told me I was special. The Judge told me the truth. He said I am Stupid."Karenk, bottomdumpin, PolygraphTrkr and 2 others Thank this. -
I mean, its always a possibility. Its really out of your hands though, no point worrying about it.
You ever heard the expression thats something like "if you always fear death, you never really live". No point trying to avoid death, its gonna come one way or another ...rachi Thanks this. -
I would be more worried about a driver who is caught up in worrying about something he / she has very little control over and not paying attention to what he / she should be doing that results in an accident. Not all distracted drivers are using a cell phone many are just in la la land all on their own

After an extensive research spanning nearly 35 years of driving a truck the data is irrefutable. 3 out of 5 ppl on the road are idiots. If you can come to terms with that keep on trucking. Otherwise get off the road it's only going to get worse.
FLATBED Thanks this.
