Worst company you ever worked for?

Averitt was the worst. Just don’t t tell the “leader”

 

some reefer company in Wisconsin. can't recall thier name, but i do know they went belly up years ago.

i couldn't have been any happier when they did.

 

A manufacturer of carpet pad. Had a full load, which might be 5-600 rolls, weighing between 70-100 lbs each.. You were expected to hump it out of the truck, and put it away for the customer. Sometimes that was across the huge warehouse from the dock.
When I started there, I was told the rate, mileage, and how many rolls you humped. Then I found out I was on a "Training wage" of $12.00 an hour, the guy I rode with told me that.
Lasted 3 days.....

 

Working for myself. The boss was a SOB.

Late 80's was between jobs and chose them over a outfit from Bozeman cause I could drive my pick up there.
2 weeks, 3 trips..each one worse than the previous one.
Last straw was when I hand loaded a trlr full of car tires near Cleveland on a fri morning for NYC on Monday..big miles.
Got there and consignee wanted it at a different warehouse. Got there and he wanted me to unload stack and count. Told him no and threatened to leave. He found 3 employees to take tires from end of trailer. Got paid $1 a thousand back then, about 5 bucks an hour for loading and unloading.
Called dispatch for next trip and an advance..I needed a shower and was told I needed to be under load, physically.
I drove to a small gas station near Hackettstown, NJ and emptied that truck and walked into town w all my gear.
Spent the night on top of a gazebo in a city park, figured It would be safest.
Next morning caught a bus to NY then the greydog home.
Longest bus ride ever. Stopping in every podunk town across Jersey and PA. Took 2 full days.
Never called the company, never let them know where the truck was, but when I got back home and went to pick up my truck at their yard my wheels had been stolen and was sitting on cinder blocks..
Needless to say not to happy.
Once I returned home the next 3 DTI trailers that someone came to pickup were rendered unusable.
Shortly afterward the weasel owner was busted for fraud and tax evasion while trying to sell the company to Schneider and eventually sold to Swift. Never lost a minute of sleep over it either.

 

Goes to show how desperate they are! My son went to their school in Marshfield and they got him a CDL. He did his 125,000 miles with them but they still took most of his last check for money he supposedly owed for school. Almost immediately they was sending him recruiting material to come back. Pretty easy to see why they need drivers all the time!

 

l worked for May for 6 months as a company driver. I went on to lease purchase a Century which l paid off on time and got clear title in my name only. l then lease purchase a newer Century which l also paid off on time, getting clear title in my name only. Then l retired. When l sold my truck, the check was made out to me only. l can say without reservation that May Trucking is fair and honest in their business dealings. They live up to the contract completely.

 

Had a job when I was young at construction job sites. Had to constantly stir mortar with a pitch fork. Job title was mortar forker.

I’m learning you MUST stand up for yourself out there as an OTR driver! Now there is a true art form to doing so and I have to watch myself. You can’t wait until you’re super angry and then boil over and blow up but you also can’t let dispatchers and managers push you around and make you for a fool. You have to find a way to let them know that you know what’s going on, you know what’s up and they’re not fooling you. Now there is a true art form to doing so and I have to watch myself.

Once you achieve this status and run hard and not complain, they’ll treat you much better and with respect. If you let your managers and dispatchers walk on you? They’ll take it and they’ll do it. Every time. it’s part of this business.

The reason I mention this is...There’s good companies out there, But if you don’t apply the above, they’re going to seem like a crappy company to you because you failed to stand up for yourself when it was called for. And there are some crappy companies out there that if you apply the above to you can make the job at least decent for yourself.
