As we all know you cant start out at the top...so sometimes you take a dive. What is the worst cdl job you have ever had?To the point that it makes you bonkers? Also I would like to hear any stories about whatever piece of crap truck you have ever driven when you started out?It seems I rarely see new cdl holders with decently maintained trucks.....just wanting some insight and Im wondering if its possible to start out with a nice truck in whatever company I look at.Or am I not seeing something?

It is possible to get both a nice truck and good company. Best to go with a smaller outfit you will be treated better.
Worst truck? Drove an Mack for bit and beat to crap freightliner to,the wind came thru the cab faster than the truck would even go :biggrin_25523:. Don't fall for the "you have no choice" stuff either.if your treated bad or disrespected,it's time to leave. Like I said it's very possible to be happy,it can only get as bad as YOU allow it to.

Back when I started Werner gave new trucks to the new drivers and the old trks to the rehires.I had a brand spaken new purple century.Loved it.But anyway it really should'nt matter what trk you get.You do a pretrip with a fine tooth comb and as long as it gets you from point A to point B and not trashed inside, take it and do your job.Werner was my first company and everyday the first couple months was a nightmare. But once I got the exp and knew their headgames I would say Werner was my worst company. When you start a company aviatornation you may not get a new trk and you should be ok with that. You just make sure to do a good pretrip and do not leave the terminal till it's to your liking.Since then every company I have drove for I have never got a new trk but a dot ready drivable trk so thats the main thing.

thank you thats exactly what i was looking for.Im not wanting a brand new truck by any means...whatever truck i did get i would make sure I took care of it no matter what it is and make the best of it.As long as its driveable and I keep it clean I dont think I would have a problem.

    Worst truck:

After I got my CDL, my first job was with a sanitation company. Sunset Sanitation in Commack, NY. I was put on a residential house route in Stonybrook, NY. I drove a 1987 Mack R600 with a Maxidyne engine and 7 speed maxitorque transmission. On my third day on the job as we were making our way to the dump to empty the truck, got pulled in by DOT at an inspection site they set up out in Coram, NY. They found 12 violations on the truck. The tickets all went in the company name.

    Worst job:

Went to work for a construction company in Brooklyn. An Irish owner that did both mason foundation work and demolition. Ended up only working one week for the guy because he called me a F ing moron everyday after I was hired. Had the supervisor cut me a check for week and took my leave.

Needless to say I only stayed there for 8 months after that. I was very much a rookie at trucking back in 1998. Now, having a excellent CSA score, equipment, benefits, and atmosphere are all priority number one for me.

Patty had a great point with trucks, if more drivers could see thing's this way we would all benefit.it shouldn't matter if it's used or a company truck, bottom line is it's yours take care of it,cause if it's broke you don't make. money. Take pride in what you do.
    Good luck to you.

Problem with this question is that by most people's standards the worst trucks I drove probably also was connected the the best job I had trucking.. First truck was a 1966 White Freightliner then I got my baby.. the 71 "flatback" Ford... Screamin Detroit power... drive it like your mad at it!

While I 100% agree with everyone else about how it really "should not matter" what kind of truck you get.

    It does.

It will make a big difference to you as far as your quality of life out on the road goes. Some of these trucks are geared towards "work" some towards "driver comfort". Everyone has their favorite type of truck....but the main thing with getting a truck that has already been used by someone is the fact that you will have to live in someone else's filth. Allow me to explain....

Since starting with this company I have had three brand new trucks, all Peterbilt. Took some getting used to them as they are not geared towards driver comfort. Not our trucks anyway...they are pretty stripped down, bare bones trucks. But they are powerful, (relatively) quick, jakes are strong, most importantly they are spotless. They are small, cramped, lack storage space and and second bunk, I can barely see over the dash while reaching the pedals, can't lift the hood without gravity helping, nor reach the windows without monkeying up the side of the truck, they are loud and the wind noise is obnoxious beyond belief, don't have cruise control, and won't idle at most temps....but as I said...this is a work truck, and I am working....

I would not trade this truck for anything.

Recently it went in the shop for a few days and they put me in a Volvo for a trip to CA and back.
On the surface I was super excited to spend a few days in that bad boy...this truck is made for OTR! Creature comforts galore!!! How wrong I was...I can not tell you how much I HATED that truck...It was an absolute NIGHTMARE of a trip....I've never been so happy to see my Pete.

Dispatch offered the use of a Pete just like mine, checked it out...the smell knocked me over as soon as I opened the door. Went in, said "absolutley not, can't do it", so they found another Pete for me, that one did not smell as badly so I okayed it. Spent 7 hours of my hometime scrubbing that bad boy clean...or so I thought. The next morning when we came back to the terminal to switch everything...hubby took one look around in the inside and nixed that one. He knew I wouldnt be able to handle it, it was worse than it had looked the night before....strike that one.

Ok, try the volvo...Strike one against this Volvo was how filthy it was, and how badly it smelled. Ditto the two Petes they offered in its place. It was the lesser of the evils available to me though. Spruced it up, loaded it and away we went.

I have never hated my job as much as I did on those few days. Say what you will about me being a priss or a whiner, but I have to LIVE in these things. Sleep, eat, live....in them. I can not live in filth. I will not live in filth. I should not be expected to, rookie or not. Neither should you. Bear that in mind when you are assigned your truck, also make sure that anything that is wrong is fixed before you leave that terminal with it. Take the time to make it comfortable for you to live it. It will help keep you sane...if its comfortable.
